EMBLEM CLUB Oktoberfest scheduled for Friday Herman Conard, of this city, is thanking his lucky star that he is per- mitted to live and move and have his being among us this beautiful day, and is congratulating him- self that Walter Osborn is a miserably poor rifle shot. And the aforemen- tioned Mr. Osborn is hug- ging himself and shiver- ing with delight that for once at least he missed what he shot at. Otherwise there would have been a tragedy at Tadpole springs Wednes- day afternoon, and the same old story of the careless hunter with a gun would have been re- peated. Conard was deer hunt- ing in the vicinity of the springs, Osborn was also hunting in that section. Neither knew of the oth- ers presence. Conard was picking his way through the heavy underbrush. Osborn was secreted in the brush a hundred feet away and also looking for a deer. C on a rd cr awle d through a wire fence and in doing so tripped and fell. As he rose to his feet he was espied by Osborn. And the thing that has led to a hundred fatal tragedies happened here. Without waiting to make sure of what he was shooting at Osborn threw his rifle to his shoulder and blazed away. The fool killer ought to have been hid in the brush just be- hind him with a cat-o- nine-tails and as mad as a hornet. The bullet barely missed Conard's clothing and struck the dirt bank by his side. He got to his feet in a hurry and to Osborn about as quickly. What he said to that careless man with a gun is not print- able. He led Osborn back to his own camp where he met three of Osborn's friends and gave them the benefit of the circum- stance. There has been so much said and written and so many warnings to hunters that it would appear to be a waste of time to discuss the mat- ter with men as careless and as reckless as men of the Osborn type. The man who takes no more precautions than Osborn took has no business in the woods with a gun. These are the fellows that take all the pleasure out of the deer season. Their recklessness makes it a real hazard for hunt- ers to go into the woods to enjoy a hunt, being in constant danger of be- ing shot by the nut that blazes away at anything and everything that looks like a deer. — Oct. 12, 1916 100 YEARS AGO...
