ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF A special ed- ucational class, the Ernie Groscup Beef Memorial Class, is being held imme- diately after Round Robin, which is at 7 p.m. Friday, in honor of the former Te- hama County resident and life-long cattleman. Ernie and his family moved in 2004 from Los Molinos to Oklahoma, where they remained ac- tive in the livestock indus- try. Groscup's daughter, Tif- fany Groscup-Goodman, still lives in Oklahoma, but following Ernie's death in 2011 wanted a way to pass on his legacy and started the class, organizing it and traveling to Red Bluff each year to put it on as a labor of love and a tribute to her father. "Our family has been very deeply involved in the livestock industry," Gros- cup-Goodman said. "This gives my dad a chance to educate kids even though he's not still here. My dad was a 4-H leader and he believed that if you don't pass on the knowledge you have to a younger kid you might as well not learn it. The whole point is to pro- mote the industry and ed- ucation." Groscup was a strong believer in teaching the children, not just giving them something, and the class is a chance for them to have fun, learn some- thing, laugh and relax, Groscup-Goodman said. It's an opportunity to teach communication skills and promote the livestock, beef and agricultural industries as a whole. There is no entry fee but participants must be reg- istered prior to the event. The class is supported by donations and sponsor- ships and T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts and hats are sold. The class will consist of a question and answer ses- sion where participants are asked different questions related to the beef indus- try. This helps to prepare each showman for the dif- ferent questions they could be asked by judges while in the show ring. The show- man's score is also based on their score during the showmanship and market conformation at the fair. Every participant receives a prize for competing. The class has been made possible through the gen- erosity of local businesses and others who have helped sponsor it. Anyone interested in donating or seeking more information about the class can call Groscup-Goodman at (256) 412-9016. Donations can be mailed to 14805 Frontier Drive, Red Bluff, 96080. Information and a list of the 2015 winners is available on the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ ErnieGroscupBeefMemo- rial. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Animals will be making their way onto the Tehama District Fair- ground starting today with weigh-ins in preparation for the 2016 Tehama District Fair and Saturday's Junior Livestock Auction. The sale begins at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Don Smith Pavilion with Grand Cham- pions on parade at 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided for those attending the sale and I-5 Tire has donated about 100 cases of bottled water to hand out during the event, said Junior Live- stock Auction President Mike Collins. 2015 was a record breaking year with $778,800 brought in, an ad- ditional $20,000 over origi- nal estimates. The amount was a significant jump from 2014 numbers when the sale brought in $701,000. The event, which is a tradition going back more than 60 years, has 13 rab- bits, 14 poultry, 27 goats, 48 beef, 60 lambs and by far the biggest group the swine, which sits at 184, Collins said. Those numbers include back-ups, which are ani- mals registered for the fair that went through the pro- cess of being assessed for fair in case the primary an- imal was not eligible. Rea- sons for not making eligibil- ity range from not making proper weight to not hav- ing a sound structure or having an issue that would make the animal unfit for human consumption, Col- lins said. "We'd like to invite the public to come out and sup- port our local kids," Collins said. "A good time will be had by all. Last year we had a tremendous record-break- ing sale. Every year we get new buyers and we have a lot of old ones that return. With the economy in the tank the last few years you think it'd be a bust, but our community's awesome. It's just amazing. You worry and worry over if you're go- ing to do okay and then the community steps up and hits a home run." The Junior Livestock committee is grateful to all those who step up and there are often people that come from as far as Chico and the bay area to attend, he said. It's estimated the sale has a 200-mile radius of how far buyers come, Collins said. Those who can't afford to buy an entire animal on their own are welcome to team up with another per- son or do an add-on option. An add-on is where the per- son tells the office staff that they want to donate money toward a sale. It can be done for either a specific child, split amongst all an- imals in a particular breed or something like whoever is the lowest selling lamb. Those who cannot attend can still donate by calling 200-0865. "It's a great way for folks to support the kids without it costing them an arm and a leg," Collins said.
