What are the qualities of a remarkable person of faith? TO LOVE ONE'S ENEMIES IS REMARKABLE The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor of St. Andrew Chris- tian Church, Olathe: When I think "faithful," I think: gener- ous, just, humble, forgiving. But, remarkable faith? Then I think: Beyers Naude and Nelson Mandela. Man- dela is familiar to many; he was imprisoned for 26 years for his efforts to free South Africans classified as black, colored or Indian. When Mandela was elected president in 1994, he invited the prison guards who had held him captive to sit in the front row at his inauguration. Born in the womb of the church, Naude was a leader in the White Dutch Reformed Church — a church that justi- fied the apartheid system that oppressed non-whites. Decades before Mandela was released, Naude spoke out against the system of white domination. At great price, he broke with the racist policies of his church and country. The sting of rejection Rejection is universal. Unhealed rejection affects every aspect of our lives. It is often projected onto those around us. Some- times our behavior even invites rejection. We do things intentionally that make others want to further reject us, thus justifying our buried hurts. Buried hurts are har- bored and trapped in our hearts like prisoners in a dungeon. Jesus is waiting to release you from your pain. Isaiah 42:7 says that He comes, "...to bring out pris- oners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house." Rejec- tion imprisons our hearts. Pre-natal and birth trau- mas are some of the most powerful and influential periods in our lives. They are the seeds from which the rest of our lives grow. Rejection can begin before the baby is born. If you were rejected in the womb, you no doubt suffer from a lot of sickness. Babies rejected in the womb have a failure to thrive. Let me tell you one of my favorite examples of healed rejection. We were praying for a woman in Quito, Ecuador. She was four months pregnant, but the doctors could detect no life. They believed the baby was dead and wanted to take it. She refused. Her boyfriend had kicked her out because she refused to have an abortion. He said it was either him or the baby. Subsequently she rejected the baby. Homeless, she went to the 700 Club and there accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. We took her through forgiveness in all avenues of this circum- stance. I had my hands on her stomach as she was asking the baby to forgive her for rejecting it. All at once I felt a tiny fast heart beat. I asked my inter- preter, who had four chil- dren of her own, to put her hands on her stomach. She too felt the heart beat. When we let the mom feel it, she broke into tears of joy. I still have the picture of little Vivianne Pamela Diaz, with the caption "Baby you prayed for in the womb." That was 21 years ago. A neurologist told me back in 1988 that rejection causes brain cells to die. When was the last time you felt the sting of rejection? Yes, rejection is felt. Proverbs 17:22 says, "A merry heart does good, like medi- cine, but a broken spirit dries the bones." Rejection wounds the spirit. Through the deception of self- protection, we often build walls around our heart to keep us from further hurts and to survive the pain. Will you choose today to open your heart to God's love and forgive those who have rejected you? When you do, His love will soften the scar tissue of rejection and heal your pain. Jesus knew rejection. He feels your pain. It says in Isaiah 53:3, "He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised and we did not esteem Him." Imagine the crowd rejecting Him with the words, "Crucify Him, crucify Him." John 1:11-12 says, "He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become chil- dren of God, to those who believe in His name." Today, will you receive Him or reject Him? J. Marilyn Adams is a minister of prayer and visitation to women in confinement. She is a well traveled missionary who has seen God's hand in her own life and in the lives of those to whom she ministers. She is the author of Freedom From Past Hurts, available on line. J.
