Ihavebeenquitevo- cal in my conviction the American people, and es- pecially American Christians, have for too long ac- cepted what- ever bone was thrown their way by the bosses in both parties. This servile commitment to voting for the so-called lesser of two evils has been dramati- cally pathetic in the Re- publican party as voters return Republican lead- ers to Congress in ever greater majorities only to find those leaders too wimpy or too beholden to the fatcats to carry out the agenda on which they were elected. I have trumpeted my commit- ment to vote for neither Donald Trump nor Hill- ary Clinton inasmuch as neither showed any seri- ous regard for God or the Constitution He inspired, both have made their liv- ing stoking the culture of rage in their supporters, and each is the creation of the power brokers. I have asked the prayer teams I coordinate in thirty-two of my state's counties to pray for what Christians call a Damas- cus Road experience in all our leaders — beginning with we who claim prayer animates us — and Trump has had one. What is that? Before Paul of Tarsus wrote one quarter of the New Testament and estab- lished the Body of Christ amongst non-Jewish be- lievers he was the self- styled enemy of all be- lievers known as Saul of Tarsus. While enroute to Damascus he engaged a profound encounter with the Risen Jesus Christ. From that point he be- came the principal dis- ciple and apostle of God in Christ. How do I know Trump — who has pub- licly disparaged Christians and their God — has en- tertained such an experi- ence? Before I answer my own question let me explain its relevance. There is nothing inher- ently good, competent, or presidential about profess- ing Christ. There are few less worthy office seek- ers than those the spiritu- ally arrogant and — God knows — many Christians fail the smug test. Yet those who embrace Christ, showing fruit of repen- tance demonsttate a trans- formed worldview. This re- pentant worldview mani- fests re-focus of attention on God, re-membrance of who we are as human be- ings, and re-dedication of heart toward submission to the Lord of abundant life. That would be all. Worldview is not just a window on personal- ity; it shapes character. No one — including the person — knows in ad- vance a person's answer to each question or cri- sis. But worldview shapes each answer. Before I vote I vote I need to know not where someone was ed- ucated or how intelli- gent and experienced, but what are his pri- mary values. Has he cour- age to swim upstream? Does he revere all human life? A leader who swal- lows the prevailing nar- rative about global warm- ing despite overwhelm- ing evidence against it is neither thoughtful nor courageous; a Christian worldview provides an al- ternative and shaping per- spective. Likewise, an as- piring leader who has great economic creden- tials and promises to cre- ate millions of jobs but who does not hold a pro- life — across the board — perspective cannot be trusted to keep his eco- nomic pledge. He feels free to pick and choose which lives are important and that permits him to de- clare unemployed or at- risk constituents expend- able. A Bible-based Chris- tian worldview shapes a more trustworthy leader. Donald Trump behaves as one meeting Jesus on that Damascus Road. He is a work in progress — like most of us — but pro- foundly transformed in worldview. The first indicator is a decidedly mellowing. Gone is the inflamma- tory rhetoric of the prima- ries. Trump is still Trump, but dialed back a lot; he was gracious enough to in- vite arch-rival Ted Cruz to speak at the nominat- ing convention where weeks ago he was ban- ning identified enemies. He persists in promising a border wall — already mandated in federal law — but has sheathed the sa- bre about forced financ- ing. He remains commit- ted to halting immigra- tion from Islamist terror zones, but now says only until a proper vetting pro- tocol is in place. These are reasonable and even gen- erous positions given the recent bloodshed in Amer- ican streets. The old Trump was vaguely pro-life while lauding Planned Parent- hood's alleged good works; the transformed man champions life across the board and offers no com- fort to agencies who kill and make excuses. The Trump who mocked Chris- tians and their Bibles is on record now before evan- gelical leaders; he both en- couraged and exhorted them to responsibility for healing national and cul- tural wounds; he prom- ised to stand with them. He pledges to repeal the Johnson Amendment they claim to fear. Reliable wit- nesses of the stature of Al- veda King and James Dob- son confirm these reports; Dobson claims first-hand knowledge of Trump's Da- mascus Road encounter. It is time for skeptics — beginning with me — to give the Lord Jesus and His new servant, Donald, a fighting chance. That is my conviction. Japjee Singh sued a school system in Georgia to get protec- tions from school bully- ing. U.S. Army Maj. Ka- maljeet Singh Kalsi, a doc- tor, fought for the ability to wear a turban while in uniform. These Sikh-Americans are all featured in a new photo exhibition opening in New York on Saturday that tries to challenge pub- lic misconceptions of prac- titioners of the religion. "When people look at a gentleman with a beard and a turban they auto- matically think he's a ter- rorist," said British Sikh photographer Naroop, who with fellow photogra- pher Amit created the "The Sikh Project" at a pop-up gallery in SoHo. "Sikhs get labeled and categorized in groups and individuals that they're not. It's time to break that barrier down and remove all the stereo- types associated with it." The exhibition features 38 portraits of Sikh-Amer- ican men and women from all walks of life — all wear- ing turbans. Among the faces is Waris Singh Ahluwalia, a New York actor whose movie credits include "The Grand Budapest Hotel." He got an airline apology after being kicked off an Aero- mexico flight in Febru- ary after he refused to re- move his turban in a pub- lic place during a security screening. Others include Vishavjit Singh, a cartoonist who adapted a Sikh Captain America persona on the streets of New York to bring awareness about so- cial identity and what it means to be a Sikh. "We wanted to bring about an exhibition that could capture the beauty of the Sikh faith and the Sikh American experience in a way that could help the American public un- derstand who we are, what we stand for and what we believe in," said Saprett Kaur, executive director of the Sikh Coalition, which is presenting the free ex- hibition. It focuses on the 15 years after 9/11 and the coali- tion's inception. Kaur said the organiza- tion was born in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy "as a response to the immense hate backlash we began ex- periencing after those at- tacks." The first came four days after 9/11 when Balbir Singh Sodhi, who wore a turban and beard, was shot and killed outside his Ari- zona gas station because of the way he looked. More recently, six people were killed in 2012 after an Army veteran opened fire on worshippers at a Sikh house of worship in Wis- consin. Despite being the fifth largest religion in the world, many Americans don't know much about Sikhism, said Kaur. It's a monotheistic religion founded 500 years ago in Indian's Punjab region with tenets emphasizing social justice, self-aware- ness, devotion and medi- tation. The turban symbol- izes a man or a woman's commitment to the faith. The photographers, who use their first names only, said they also selected Sikhs from various pro- fessions to highlight their contributions to American society and its economy. For Ahluwalia, the prem- ise of the "The Sikh Proj- ect" is not complicated. "It highlights that we're a community in America and we come in all shapes, sizes and colors," he said.
