3 I t didn't take long for Darien Nelson-Henry D'15 to recognize this was not a typical fraternity. "I could tell it was different than all of the other organizations on campus," Darien said. "The brothers were closer than other fraternities and each person cared for the well-being of other brothers." Membership in St. Anthony Hall gave Darien great pride and a feeling of respect among his peers. "Walking in through the black gates at 3637 Locust Walk and looking up at our house is special to me because I know only a select group of people have been able to call the Hall home," Darien said. Delta Chapter and its brotherhood quickly began to shape Darien's college experience and his development into adulthood. "The Hall was a place of refuge for me," he said. "Not only was it a place where I could be myself, but it was a place where my best friends could help shape me into a better version of myself. The Hall made me a better thinker, more sociable, and best of all, a more loyal friend." When he started at Penn, basketball was Darien's primary focus. He scored 219 points in his first season as a Center for the Quakers, growing every year. By his senior year, Darien was team Captain and had scored a total of 1,054 points in his college career. Though he was to play basketball for one of the oldest and storied programs in the country's history, he quickly learned there was much more to his university experience. "While my focus never diverted from basketball, I did start to realize the importance of academics, relationships, and the immense network that Penn provides. As I got older, I was able to balance these things more and took advantage of all Penn had to offer," Darien said. Being a member of St. Anthony Hall not only supported Darien's academic pursuits and his basketball career, but also its alumni, such as Stephen G. Smith D'69, expanded his understanding of brotherhood. After meeting each other at Homecoming, Stephen and Darien continued to stay in touch as Stephen followed the Quakers' season, attended games, and offered words of encouragement. "The fact that after all these years he still shows support for active brothers demonstrates how much this place means to him, and therefore the rest of the men who have passed through these doors," Darien said. Darien's basketball career will not end after graduating last spring, but will continue into his alumni life. "I will be playing FIBA basketball professionally, most likely in Western Europe. The signing period is not until August, so my options are still open, but that is where I see myself," he said. Though he has just left his undergraduate years in the Hall behind, its imprint will forever be left on Darien. Reflecting on his college experience he said, "The most rewarding part of being a Quaker is knowing I will be part of an elite group of people for the rest of my life through the long lasting traditions of St. Anthony Hall. From Undergraduate to Alumnus Red and Blue Captain Darien Nelson-Henry D'15 Shares Hall Experience Letter from the Undergraduate President G reetings from the undergraduate members of Delta Chapter of St. Anthony Hall. The spring semester was filled with excitement from the initiation of new members to alumni events to the individual successes of our members. Athletic Accolades Athletics remain a strength and focus of our chapter. Darien Nelson- Henry D'15 served as Captain of the Penn men's basketball team and was voted second-team all-Ivy this year. On the squash court, Hayes Murphy D'15 was named second team All-American as a sophomore and Kevin Gayhardt D'14 was voted captain of the lacrosse team as a junior. Academics and Service Remain a Focus We are proud of the hard work and time our members dedicate to serving the community. Alejandro Rodriguez D'13 has been leading our efforts to assist the St. James School, a local Philadelphia school. Alejandro has spearheaded the project for the past three years, helping clean the school's basement, painting rooms, tutoring students, and taking brothers to the school each Friday to assist in classrooms. Equally important are the academic achievements of our chapter. Jack Tyree D'14 is the president of the energy club at Penn, which recently won the award for Wharton's most innovative event. As part of his position, Tyree led a trip to a drilling site in the Marcellus Shale in western Pennsylvania. Connecting with Alumni Our Homecoming event in November was a huge success and we could not be more grateful to everyone who attended, and for the alumni who helped organize the event. It is one of our biggest events for recruiting new members and we are known for having the most successful Homecoming event on campus. Supporting Local Events This spring, the Hall had 13 brothers, both current and alumni, run in the Philadelphia Love Run half-marathon to raise money in memory of Jordie Maine, father of Jack Maine D'12, who passed away from acute myeloid leukemia in February. The Hall stationed a tent at the finish line where undergraduates and parents gathered with food and drinks. We raised more than $5,000 for the cause. Overall, it was another successful semester at 3637 and we look forward to a great fall and seeing alumni and their families at the Delta GC Banquet in Januray 2017.
