Mateo Martinez tossed to Eman- uel Valdivia, who took it down the sideline 55 yards for the touchdown. A bad snap on the extra point left the Trojans down 10-6 with 8:14 left in the half. The Cardinals would punt and the Trojans took drove the field before full- back Andrew Long took it in for the score to put Or- land up 13-10, which would be the score when time ran out in the half. Corning would start the second half with a drive, but quarterback Devin Wunsch was picked off and the Trojans took over on the Cardinals 20. But they couldn't capitalize, missing a field goal. Wunsch began hitting his targets, though, and this would be the key to the second half come- back. After Oscar Torres re- covered a Trojans fumble, Wunsch connected with Curtis McCoy from the 28 for the score, putting the Cardinals back on top 17-13 with 3:16 left in the third. On the next Cardinals drive, McCoy would con- vert on a fourth and 2 at midfield and Garcia would dodge and weave into the end zone from the 35. The Cardinals were up 24-13 in the fourth. That's when Orland's of- fense got going again, with Martinez throwing to a wide open Daniel Evans for a 58-yard score to pull within 5 after a failed con- version with 8:02 to play. The Cardinals stalled and the Trojans took over at their own 42 after a per- sonal foul call on the punt. Another personal foul call kept the Trojans drive alive and gave them the ball first and goal from just inside the Corning 10. Orland would score to take a 25- 24 lead with 2:11 to play. That's where the game got interesting. The Cardinals would start from their own 30 with 2 minutes to play. Wunsch on a keeper took the ball into Orland terri- tory with less than a min- ute to play. Wunsch took a sack and the Cards took a time out on the Orland 35 with 32 seconds to go. A Wunsch toss to McCoy took the ball to the 25 and a personal foul call against the Trojans took the ball to the Orland 12 with the clock running. The Cardinals just man- aged to get a snap off to spike the ball with 1.7 sec- onds on the clock, setting up Gonzalez's game-win- ning field goal. "This game is all about having a plan when you go out," Studer told his team. "It's all about being pre- pared and being able to adjust. It only gets better from here." The Cardinals (2-1) will travel to Oroville to take on the winless Tigers (0-3) Sept. 16. Orland (1-2) will host the Red Bluff Spar- tans (0-3). Kickoff for both games is estimated to be 7:30 p.m. Stats Wunsch went 8 for 25 for 129 yards passing with a touchdown and an in- terception and carried the ball 10 times for 31 yards. Garcia led the team on the ground with 53 yards on 9 carries and 2 touch- downs, followed by McCoy with 38 yards on 8 carries and Cole Parker with 15 yards on 6 carries. Maeder had 68 yards on 3 catches with a long of 57 yards, McCoy had 66 yards on 3 catches and a touchdown and Brendan Steward had 55 yards on 2 catches. Maeder led the defense with 11 tackles, followed by McCoy and sophomore Ramses Ortiz with 9 tack- les each. Junior Angel Leal recorded a sack. Gonzales was perfect on the night going 3 for 3 on extra points and 2 for 2 on field goals. Of 5 kickoffs, 4 were touchbacks. Cardinals FROM PAGE 1 plans, but that's exhausting it right there." Osemele was the high- est graded lineman in the league by Profootballfocus. com, and Penn, according to the same web site, didn't allow a single pressure or for Carr to be hit on 38 pass plays. On Richard's 75-yard run, Osemele pancaked Craig Robertson, Feliciano walled off John Jenkins and Smith — who was next up at tackle if there were any more injuries — flat- tened outside linebacker Paul Kruger. Exactly how the offen- sive line will shake out when the Raiders play their home opener Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons is to be determined. Watson and McCants were having tests done Monday. Del Rio said he didn't believe their inju- ries were long-term but conceded, "We'll just see whether or not they're go- ing to make it this week." Tackle Austin Howard, the primary backup at both tackle spots, didn't travel to New Orleans with an an- kle injury and his status is undetermined. • Cornerback Sean Smith, who was benched after giving up a 98-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Brandin Cooks and struggling even before that play, will start against At- lanta, Del Rio said. "He's a big boy. He'll bounce back," Del Rio said. "He's going to be a good player for us, but it was not what what we need, and he knows that." By contrast, Del Rio said DJ Hayden, who drew two pass interference penal- ties and a holding penalty "fought his butt off . . he's been consistent this year, this camp." • The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty assessed to Crabtree following the two-point conversion as not a throat slash, accord- ing to Del Rio, but a ges- ture from the HBO comedy "East Down and Bound." "Now maybe you can't do that move, either," Del Rio said. • Strong safety Keith Mc- Gill was the surprise starter over Nate Allen and rookie first-round pick Karl Jo- seph. McGill played 67 of 69 snaps, with Allen play- ing five snaps and Joseph none. "You could go with the veteran guy, you could go with the young guy that has the draft status, or you could go with the guy that's earned it on the field," Del Rio said. "We elected to go with the guy that earned it on the field." • Of the Raiders 14 pen- alties, six were on offense, five on defense and three on special teams. Only three were pre-snap pen- alties — false starts on McCants and Smith and encroachment on Shilique Calhoun. Raiders FROM PAGE 1 fourth-quarter touchdown. Then Roethlisberger was at it again, taking the Steel- ers 77 yards as Williams put the game away with a 15-yard touchdown run to break the 30-point mark . Prime time ready Steelers coach Mike Tomlin improved to 11-2 on Monday night, includ- ing 6-2 on the road and 2-0 at Washington. Pitts- burgh is 4-1 when open- ing the season on Monday night, and the Steelers' 44- 24 record on MNF is third- best in the NFL behind Se- attle (23-6) and San Fran- cisco (47-25). The Redskins have lost 15 of their past 16 Monday Night home games. Hopping Hopkins Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins made all three of his field-goal at- tempts, connecting from 31, 40 and 34 yards. Hopkins was the Redskins' entire offensive production until Thompson's touchdown. Pinball Rogers Rogers' first career touchdown catch in his NFL debut was a pinball special. Roethlisberg- er's pass from the 3-yard line hit receiver Sammie Coates and then Rogers' facemask before he fin- ished the grab. Shazier, playmaker The play after forcing a fumble that the Red- skins recovered, Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier picked off Cousins to set up Brown's 26-yard TD catch in the third quar- ter. Shazier left the game with a right knee injury and was being evaluated after the game. Tomlin said he'd have more infor- mation Tuesday. Running on empty Jones was in the starting lineup after separating his left shoulder on Aug. 19, but he lost 4 yards on his first two carries and finished with 24 yards on seven car- ries. Washington totaled 55 yards rushing, including just 28 in the first half. Reed option Reed caught three passes for 39 yards on the Redskins' opening drive and was a nonfactor with four catches for 25 yards the rest of the way. The Oakland Athletics looked like a team battling for a playoff spot Monday night, and the Kansas City Royals looked like a team checked out and ready for the offseason. It was supposed to be the other way around. Khris Davis and Mar- cus Semien hit three-run homers, the lowly Ath- letics matched a season high with 17 hits while drawing 10 walks, and they trounced the Roy- als 16-3 in their series opener. "It's great to have a game like that," A's man- ager Bob Melvin said. "For a team that strug- gles to score runs, it's nice to have a positive mood in the dugout." In the opposite dugout, the reigning World Series champions could only rue another game slipping away. The Royals (74-69) began the day four back of the final wild-card spot with 20 games to go, and hoped an eight- game stand against Oak- land and the White Sox would allow them to gain ground. But with five teams standing in their way, time is running out. AMERICAN LEAGUE A's trounce Royals behind 17 hits | SPORTS | REDBLUFFDAILYNEWS.COM TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2016 2 B
