ByChipThompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter CORNING It's been more than five years since the Corning Cardinals football team beat its neighbor and rival Orland Trojans and Friday night they were due. It took every second of the game, but the Cardinals didn't disappoint the home crowd, taking 27-25 win on a Junior Gonzalez field goal at time ran out. The team rushed the field and mobbed Gonzalez at midfield as the grandstands roared. "They've been really strong but our kids battled hard," said coach John Studer after the win. "It's not so much about the rivalry, it's about great play." The Cardinals struck first with a 43-yard Gonzalez field goal after a fake punt extended their first drive. The Corning defense held and on the next drive running back Nolan Peterson took the handoff and then threw to tight end Noah Maeder for 60 yards to the Trojans 5 yard line. Running back Oscar Garcia spun and ground out a run to reach the end zone, putting Corning up 10-0. The Trojans stalled and Corning took over at the Orland 41, but a fum- ble turned the tide and the Trojans took the ball at their own 45. An Or- land fumble put the ball back in the Cardinals hands with 10:10 left in the half. The Cardinals would be forced to punt and the Trojans offense FOOTBALL CARDINALSTAKELAST SECOND WIN OVER ORLAND CorningCardinalsrunningbackOscarGarcia,23,breaksa tackle Friday night against the Orland Trojans. Ben Roeth- lisberger recovered his own fumble at a pivotal moment and didn't look back, throw- ing three touchdown passes to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 38-16 victory over the Washing- ton Redskins on Monday night. Roethlisberger completed 27 of 37 passes for 300 yards, including two touchdowns to All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown and another to Eli Rog- ers. Often playing on the op- posite side from Josh Norman and tormenting cornerback Bashaud Breeland, Brown made eight catches for 126 yards. Starting in place of the sus- pended Le'Veon Bell, DeAngelo Williams ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. "We're confident in that group," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "I know we were missing some pieces tonight, but we had 7. And when you got 7 you got the chance to put to- gether performances like that." Washington led 6-0 and ap- peared to have another scor- ing opportunity late in the first quarter when linebacker Ryan Kerrigan sacked and stripped Roethlisberger deep in Pitts- burgh territory. Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey knocked the ball out of Kerrigan's hands, and Roethlisberger dived on it at his own 13-yard line. Roethlisberger then guided Pittsburgh 87 yards down the field, finishing the drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Brown on a gutsy fourth-and-1 call from the Washington 29. "It's always pretty good to dial his number," Tomlin said. "He is Antonio Brown, and he lived up to it tonight." The next time he got the ball, Big Ben took the Steelers 67 yards on 14 plays to make it 14-6. Pittsburgh's passing attack got clicking, but Kirk Cousins and the Redskins couldn't keep up. With Matt Jones and the running game grounded and tight end Jordan Reed taken out of the picture, Cousins finished 30 of 43 for 329 yards and two interceptions. By Jerry McDonald Bay Area News Group ALAMEDA Jack Del Rio said he was keeping his decision-mak- ing process "in-house" with re- gard to going for two points and the win against New Orleans, but the Raiders coach understood he wouldn't have been in position to make the call had it not been for the play of his makeshift offen- sive line. "I'm not a gambler. I don't do much at the horses races or go to the casino," Del Rio said. "But I do believe in having the cour- age to do what I think is best for this football team. And I under- stand that with that, questions get asked. Good or bad, I'm will- ing to do that." The Raiders won when Derek Carr's two-point conversion pass was caught by a leaping Michael Crabtree with 47 seconds left to play and the Saints' Wil Lutz missed a 61-yard field goal at- tempt at the gun. The play to Crabtree with sin- gle coverage against Ken Crawley was available in part because the Raiders had established a stout running game that not only in- cluded a 75-yard burst by Jalen Richard but two tough short touchdown runs, 6 yards by Lat- avius Murray and 2 yards by full- back Jamize Olawale. The Saints had no choice but to respect the possibility the Raiders might run the ball, so Del Rio — even if he's not a gambler — liked his odds. "It's going to create almost mandatory one-on-one situa- tions, and a guy like Michael one- on-one, that's a pretty good bet there," Del Rio said. The Raiders rushed for 166 yards, the most since Del Rio took over with Bill Musgrave as offen- sive coordinator and the most since gaining 179 yards in a win over Kansas City on Nov. 20, 2014. As for pass blocking, Carr was not sacked in the game. All this was accomplished de- spite the Raiders losing right tackle Menelik Watson after 24 snaps to a groin injury and then backup Matt McCants 25 snaps later to a knee injury. After McCants went out, line coach Mike Tice moved Donald Penn from left tackle to right tackle, Kelechi Osemele from left guard to left tackle, and Jon Fe- liciano from the bench to left guard. Penn, an 11-year veteran who had never played in a game on the right side, was at right tackle for 24 snaps. "I think the offensive line did a phenomenal job," Del Rio said. "I think guys adjusted and car- ried on. It was really awesome to see.
