F or 11 years, the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC) has steadily grown its donor base and significantly increased its presence on Capitol Hill. With dedicated board members, a tenacious executive director, and generous donors, the FSPAC has become the second largest higher education PAC in Washington, D.C. Now it is time for the FSPAC to move to the next level—to increase its ability to fundraise, to attract high volume donors, and, ultimately, to impact the future of the fraternity and sorority experience in monumental ways. With approval of the FSPAC board on June 9, 2016, the position of Director of Development was established. The Director of Development will be responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gifts to the FSPAC. When needed, the Director of Development will also assist members of the FSPAC board in their fundraising efforts. As of August 1, 2016, Julie Cain Burkhard, ACW, will fulfill the duties of the Director of Development for FSPAC. Julie has worked in higher education and the fraternity/sorority community for 36 years. As the former National President of Alpha Chi Omega, the former Chairman of the National Panhellenic Conference, and the former Executive Director of the Phi Mu Foundation, Julie brings a strong background in fundraising. She is a founding member of the FSPAC board, having served on that board since 2005. Julie has served as president of both the FSPAC and the Fraternity and Sorority Action Fund and is a welcome addition to the efforts to take another big step in the FSPAC's growth and impact in Washington. With an upcoming presidential election as well as many congressional seats up for grabs, this season will prove to be one of high stress, with everything coming down to one night on November 8. New Congressional Candidates Receive FSPAC Support The Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC) is well positioned finan- cially to assist many candidates who we have supported over the years, as well as newcomers who have much promise for the future. The FSPAC board of directors firmly believes in assisting members with Greek affiliation get elected to office in Washington, D.C., and others who support various issues that we have been engaged with over the years, like collegiate housing, charitable giving, and campus safety. Legislative Topics at the Forefront Issues such as freedom of association and pres- ervation of single-sex status have seen much discussion lately and that is something we are watching closely. Preserving the Greek experience for future generations of student leaders It is amazing to look back and see the growth of the FSPAC, not only in fundraising, but the size of the board of directors as well. We currently have 54 board members representing over 30 fraternal organizations. Our past leadership has ensured this growth and prosperous positioning. I am honored to serve as the FSPAC president this term. The direction we have chosen is one that will continue our growth into the future. I encourage you to get involved, even if in a small way, in the political process. It is up to all of us to help get the right people elected to Congress and engage in the issues that affect us.
