DePauw Phi THE I N D I A N A Z E T A C H A P T E R O F P H I D E L T A T H E T A FALL 2016 D id you know that approximately one out of every seven male DePauw graduates is a Phi Delt? From our humble beginnings, the Indiana Zeta Chapter has been a force at DePauw University as well as with Phi Delta Theta International. Indiana Zeta turned 148 years old in February. Established at DePauw University, previously known as Indiana Asbury College, in the winter of 1868, decades before the first dormitory, the Chapter has since initiated more than 2,100 DePauw men. Our home at 446 Anderson Street was built in 1926 at a remarkable cost of $50,000. The new addition was added in 1962 for $170,000. For comparison, our recent fire and alarm system alone cost more than those two figures combined. Every living alumnus of Indiana Zeta has lived in this house. Up until that time, members lived in and met at homes rented in the area. We know of at least three homes, none of which still stand, where our forefathers were housed. We take for granted the term house, yet many know that Indiana Asbury College had no Fraternity houses or dormitories for many years. At the time of Phi Delt's founding, all students lived in existing area homes, often boarding houses. In fact, the first residence halls did not arrive for 50 years after the school's founding, decades after Phi Delt members first wore their badges here. In the early years of Phi Delta Theta, the first, or Alpha Chapters in each state, had the power and responsibility of granting charters. We owe our founding to the Phis at Indiana University. It was these brothers who initiated four Indiana Asbury men in February of 1868 in a Greencastle downtown office. From your Phikeia education days, you may remember the names of John R. Miller '68, Tolbert Bartl '69, Charles O. Perry '69, and D.B. Floyd '72. These members pledged friendship, sound learning, and moral rectitude and affixed their signatures to the exact same documented words you did and young DePauw men continue to do today: the Bond of Phi Delta Theta. From our humble beginnings until now, alumni dedication and gifts of time, treasure, and talent have allowed Phi Delt to thrive at DePauw University.
