ByKevinFreking The Associated Press WASHINGTON The United States on Monday met President Barack Obama's goal of admitting 10,000 Syrian refugees into the country, the White House announced. Obama sought a sixfold increase in the number of Syrian refugees provided safe haven in the United States. After a slow start, the administration was able to hit the goal about a month early and just a few weeks before Obama convenes a summit on ref- ugees during the 71st ses- sion of the United Nations General Assembly. Obama would have been hard-pressed to make the case for other countries to do more with the U.S. failing to reach a goal that amounts to only about 2 percent of the 480,000 Syr- ian refugees in need of re- settlement. Millions more Syrians have fled to neigh- boring states such as Jor- dan, Turkey and Lebanon and to countries in Europe since the civil war broke out in 2011. "On behalf of the pres- ident and his administra- tion, I extend the warm- est of welcomes to each and every one of our Syr- ian arrivals, as well as the many other refugees reset- tled this year from all over the world," National Se- curity Adviser Susan Rice said in a statement. Rice said the summit in New York City will high- light the contributions the U.S. and other nations have made to help refugees. She said the U.S. has commit- ted to working with the in- ternational community to increase funding for hu- manitarian assistance and double the number of refu- gees afforded the opportu- nity to resettle. The increase in Syr- ian refugees also comes at a time of heightened national security con- cerns following extrem- ist attacks in the U.S. and abroad. The Obama ad- ministration has said that refugees fleeing war and persecution are the most scrutinized of all immi- grants who come into the United States. The process typically takes 12 months to 18 months and includes in-person interviews and a review of biographical and biometric information. Officers with the United States Citizenship and Im- migration Services travel to the country where the refu- gees fled to interview them. Upon completion of secu- rity and medical screen- ing, the Homeland Secu- rity officer may approve the refugee's application for U.S. resettlement. After approval, arrangements are made to match the refugee with a voluntary agency in the U.S. that specializes in helping them find a new home and employment. White House spokes- man Josh Earnest said the United States will also seek to admit about 10,000 Syrian refugees in the coming fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. "I think the president would like to see a ramp- ing up of those efforts, but I think the president is also realistic about how quickly that can happen," Earnest said. By Sandy Cohen The Associated Press LOSANGELES Gene Wilder, the frizzy-haired actor who brought his deft comedic touch to such unforgetta- ble roles as the neurotic ac- countant in "The Produc- ers" and the mad scientist of "Young Frankenstein," has died. He was 83. Wilder's nephew said Monday that the actor and writer died late Sunday at his home in Stamford, Con- necticut, from complica- tions from Alzheimer's dis- ease. Jordan Walker-Pearl- man said in a statement that Wilder was diagnosed with the disease three years ago, but kept the condition private so as not to disap- point fans. "He simply couldn't bear the idea of one less smile in the world," Walker-Pearl- man said. Wilder started his act- ing career on the stage, but millions knew him from his work in the movies, es- pecially his collaborations with Mel Brooks on "The Producers," "Blazing Sad- dles" and "Young Franken- stein." The last film — with Wilder playing a Califor- nia-born descendant of the mad scientist, insisting that his name is pronounced "Frahn-ken-SHTEEN" — was co-written by Brooks and Wilder. "Gene Wilder, one of the truly great talents of our time, is gone," Brooks wrote in a statement Monday. "He blessed every film we did together with his special magic and he blessed my life with his friendship. He will be so missed." With his unkempt hair and big, buggy eyes, Wilder was a master at playing panicked characters caught up in schemes that only a madman such as Brooks could devise, whether re- viving a monster in "Young Frankenstein" or bilking Broadway in "The Produc- ers." Brooks would call him "God's perfect prey, the vic- tim in all of us." But he also knew how to keep it cool as the boozing gunslinger in "Blazing Sad- dles" or the charming candy man in the children's favor- ite "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." His cra- ziest role: the therapist hav- ing an affair with a sheep in Woody Allen's "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex." "The greatest comedic mind of my childhood is now gone," actor Josh Gad wrote on Twitter. "#RIP #GeneWilder & thank you 4 your pure imagination. This one hits hard." Tweeted Jim Carrey: "Gene Wilder was one of the funniest and sweetest ener- gies ever to take a human form. If there's a heaven he has a Golden Ticket." Wilder was close friends with Richard Pryor and their contrasting personas — Wilder uptight, Pryor loose — were ideal for com- edy. They co-starred in four films: "Silver Streak," "Stir Crazy," "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" and "Another You."
