Criteria guiding selec- tion of recipients of the four awards will be as follows. Gene Penne Award for Business and Community Leadership: This award will be presented to a cur- rent or former represen- tative of a business mem- ber of the Red Bluff-Te- hama County Chamber of Commerce who has dem- onstrated exceptional per- sonal commitment to the Red Bluff and Tehama County business commu- nity. The award, first pre- sented in 1998, is named for Gene Penne, a former Red Bluff civic leader and Chamber President whose leadership and contribu- tions to the community set the standard for the award's recipients who have fol- lowed, including Dan Car- gile, Orville Jacobs, Kevin Brunnemer, John Koberer, Ron Clark, Gary Napier, Bill Moule, Cindy Brown, John Yingling, Marshall Pike, Bill Cornelius, John and Mike Growney, Jessie Woods and Linda Durrer. Business of the Year: This award will be presented to honor a Tehama County business which has effec- tively demonstrated "best practices" in customer ser- vice, community service and a track record of sup- port for the local business community. Last year's re- cipient was St. Elizabeth Community Hospital. The Chamber Spirit Award: This award will be presented to an individ- ual who has inspired, mo- tivated and mobilized oth- ers with his or her ideas, character, hard work, lead- ership by example, cooper- ation, follow-through and results. Lou Aviles was the recipient of this award last year. The Chamber Beautifi- cation Award: This award will be presented to a Te- hama County Business that has added to the attraction and curb appeal of their neighborhood by enhanc- ing the appearance of their storefront, interior and sig- nage. Tehama Tire won this award last year. REDBLUFFCHAMBER Dinnerthemeis building on a legacy CONTRIBUTEDPHOTO Members of the Sunrise Rotary Club pose for a photo at the 2015awards dinner. Next week, we observe Labor Day, a celebration of the American worker. And there's a lot to cel- ebrate, be- cause our workers have ac- complished great things and, in the process, demonstrated a variety of impressive character traits — many of which also can be useful to in- vestors. For example: Perseverance — Have you ever read about an inventor who failed doz- ens of times before finally hitting on a winner? Or a scientist who studied the same problem for de- cades before discovering a revolutionary solution? All kinds of workers dis- play this type of persever- ance, in one form or an- other. As an investor, you, too, will need this "stick- to-itiveness" because you will face challenges. Mar- kets will drop, individ- ual investments may dis- appoint, tax laws may change, and so on. But if you're patient, and you follow a long-term strat- egy that's based on your needs, risk tolerance and time horizon, you can overcome those obsta- cles that may be block- ing progress toward your goals. Inquisitiveness — During your own work, you've probably found that you can improve your effectiveness simply by asking a few ques- tions or otherwise learn- ing a little more about your tasks at hand. As an investor, you'll also find that knowledge is power — because the more you know about in- vesting and investments, the better prepared you can be when making de- cisions. Sometimes, this knowledge can help you look past the so-called experts who are tout- ing the "next hot stock." Other times, your cu- riosity may lead you to find new opportunities. In any case, learn as much as you can, and if you work with a finan- cial professional, ask questions — as many as necessary. The invest- ment world is fascinat- ing, and it can be com- plex — but it is also un- derstandable to those who make the effort. Flexibility — When something isn't working, you may need to try an- other approach. Success- ful workers know this — and so do successful investors. Suppose, for example, you have been trying to boost your overall return by buying and selling investments. After a while, you may realize that such behav- ior is costly — in more ways than one. You will likely rack up fees and commissions, you may incur the highest rate of capital gains taxes (as- sessed on investments held less than one year), and you will be disrupt- ing any cohesive invest- ment strategy you've es- tablished. Upon recog- nizing these problems, you could decide to "switch gears" and follow a long-term, "buy-and- hold" strategy. That's flexibility — and that's a great attribute for inves- tors. Vision — Good work- ers have a clear picture of what they want to accom- plish — and they know what they must do reach their goal. As an inves- tor, you also need to es- tablish a vision of where you want to go and how you can get there. So when contemplating your retirement, try to fore- see the lifestyle you hope to lead — will you travel the world or stay close to home, pursuing your hob- bies? Then, use this vi- sion to help guide your actions, such as increas- ing your contributions to your 401(k) or IRA, or changing the invest- ment mix within these ac- counts. Transferring what you learn from the working world to the investment arena can help make in- vesting a less laborious — and potentially more en- joyable — process. So put that knowledge to good use.
