DearMary:Ourwa- ter pressure is very high, which has created rust- colored stains in our fiber- glass bath- tub. I tried scrubbing with Comet, but that did noth- ing. How can I remove these terrible stains? — MaryAnne Dear MaryAnne: I'm go- ing to assume you've also already tried using a paste made of baking soda and white vinegar. If neither solution worked, I have two op- tions for you, starting with a product you may al- ready own, but have never dreamed you'd use in a bathtub: Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner. Seriously, it's the best thing for fiberglass, acrylic and porcelain tubs. Cover the stains with it and let it sit for an hour or so. You may need to scrub with a Scotch-Brite or similar scrubber. I am reasonably confi- dent this will remove the rust stains. However, if your stains are really stubborn, or if you don't already own the Lysol cleaner, I'd skip the Lysol and go straight to the big gun of rust remov- ers: Iron Out. I love this product be- cause it contains no harsh or abrasive chemicals, un- like other rust removers. But even so, it is power stuff! Dear Mary: Could you suggest another product for cleaning a front-load- ing washing machine be- sides Tide Washing Ma- chine Cleaner? When my husband uses it our whole house smells like chemicals for a week. Do you have a homemade recipe? — Robyn Dear Robyn: Before I tell you, promise me you will weigh it against the owner's manual that came with your washer. I don't want you to do anything that might invalidate your warranty. I have a fairly new GE Front Loader. It has a "Basket Clean" setting, which I am supposed to run monthly. The instructions say to pour a gallon of liq- uid chlorine bleach into the drum (while empty), close the door and turn on the Basket Clean cycle. Do you see where I'm go- ing here? I believe bleach is the answer. I'm not saying it isn't smelly, but the smell dissipates quickly, usually by the time the cleaning cycle is finished. The reason front-load- ers need to be cleaned is to kill any bacteria or mold that might be grow- ing in the tight gaskets and seals that are unique to front-loaders. Bleach is a powerful foe of bac- teria. Dear Mary: If my mem- ory is correct, I believe you have discussed the idea of buying a prepaid mobile phone service at a highly discounted rate of about $150 to $200 per year. As I recall there is no contract required. I thought I'd saved that col- umn, but now I can't find it. Can you refresh my memory? Thank you. — Eugenie Dear Eugenie: I'm pretty sure you are refer- ring to the TracFone ser- vice and a tip I received from one of your fellow EC readers, Julie. Here's what she said: "I have been using Trac- Fone for more than 13 years without any kind of contract, bills or credit checks. I highly recom- mend this company. I bought a $49.99 smart- phone from TracFone.com that takes pictures and videos and can talk and text. "I always purchase the 365-day plan for $99 pre- paid. (It works out to be $8.25 per month.) When I get to the checkout they sweeten the deal by asking if I'd like to purchase an ad- ditional year for an ex- tra $50. What a deal! At $149 total, that's only $6.21 per month for 24 months. "The phone is very sim- ple to use. I will proba- bly be with TracFone for the rest of my life. You can purchase online (which I do) or in stores like Sears and Kmart." GRADUATION Rosssworninasthird- generation CHP officer Cal Fire announced Wednesday it will be awarding nearly $16 mil- lion for fire prevention grants to local fire depart- ments and fire safe coun- cils to reduce the threat of large wildfires. The 2016-2017 State Responsibility Area Fire Prevention Fund and tree mortality grants are aimed at reducing the threat wildfires as well as dead and dying trees in and around communities within the State Respon- sibility Area. "In just the last couple of weeks, we have seen how destructive this fire season has already been and the critical role fire prevention projects play in helping us protect lives and property," said Chief Ken Pimlott, Cal Fire director. The grants have a one- time appropriation of $10 million that is intended to address the risk and poten- tial impact of wildfire and dead and dying trees on habitable structures in the SRA. The grants provide a one-time allocation of $6 million for fire prevention projects that are not lim- ited to the SRA. The target audiences for the grants include, but are not limited to, local gov- ernment agencies, fire dis- tricts and fire safe councils to augment recent fire pre- vention projects. The grant amount will be limited to a maximum of $200,000 per project. This will allow for broad distribution of grant funds to local government agen- cies and organizations throughout the State. Applications are due Sept. 28 by 3 p.m. Cal Fire is encouraging a wide range of applicants throughout the state to ap- ply for this funding.
