After watch- ing two weeks of political conven- tions with "we're right, they're wrong" mentality, it's nice to take a break for the 2016 Olympics. Now we can watch the world's athletes come together in Rio. It's a wel- come break after listening of hours of divisive propaganda aimed at breaking us apart. I enjoyed the spectacle of opening ceremony, which always is full of delightful "eye candy," and highlights athletes mingling with each other and mak- ing new friends. "The goal of the Olympic Move- ment is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understand- ing with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play," from www. Olympic.org. If you need someone to speak with after Sunday's devastating news, Cenpatico Crisis Line is open 24 hours/day. 1-866-495-6735 I hope our politicians are pay- ing attention! The International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 on the belief that sport can contribute to peace and to the har- monious development of human- kind. In other words, just play nice! Our children are returning to school this week with hopes of see- ing classmates, and having new ex- periences. We have expectations of our teachers to be good examples for our youngsters. Our children learn how to get along and to play in the spirit of peace. We should have high expectations of our politicians as well. They should have hope for the future, be open to new experiences and ideas, and be willing to Play Nice! As we celebrate the wins of indi- viduals and teams in the Olympics, let's remember the spirit of hope the Olympics bring...not just to the athletes, but to the world as a whole. They teach us to Respect cultures we may not understand, be open to new experiences and most of all, to enjoy the journey. If the national political scene is disheartening, get over it and focus on where you can make change; at the local level. Know that your vote does matter, especially in local races. So let the athletes inspire you and enjoy the journey! The new Chamber Area Chamber & Tourism are now on summer hours. The office is Open 10am-2pm; closed Tuesdays and Sunday.
