By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor PALO CEDRO — It was a nice debut for the Cardinals and an even better rebound for the Spartans, Satur- day, at the Northern Section's Division I wrestling championships at Foothill High School. Corning moving up to Division I this season, sent three wrestlers to championship matches on their way to a fifth place finish. Thomas Marshall captured the 217- pound title. The 217-pound division would also prove pivotal for Red Bluff, which rebounded from a third place perfor- mance at the Eastern Athletic League championships a week early to take second place behind the powerhouse Chico Panthers. Red Bluff had found itself in a vir- tual tie with Foothill, who had beat out the Spartans at the EALs, heading into the 217-pound third place match, where each school had a wrestler. In the match, Red Bluff's Taylor Wilson, who had won the EAL title a week earlier, but was suffering from a bout of the flu Saturday, pinned Foothill's wrestler to give the Spartans enough points to place second. One mat over, Marshall was captur- ing the 217-pound title with a 3-1 slug- fest win over Chico's Max Bristow, the same wrestler Taylor had pinned when he was at 100 percent at the EALs. In a move Corning coach Armando Romo said was made to help the team, Marshall had dropped down to capture the 191-pound a week earlier at the Northern Athletic League champi- onships. Marshall said he was glad to be back up to 217 on Saturday, a weight he says he feels stronger at. That came into play against Bris- tow, in a match Marshall said was slowed down because of the strength of his opponent. "Brawn versus brawn, doesn't go too fast," he said. The Cardinals Johnson boys, Tan- ner and Nick, also reached finals. Tanner was pinned by no slouch at 121 pounds when Paradise's Blain Shaw got him with 26 seconds left in the second round. Nick appeared at first to be over- matched in his 142-pound match with Foothill's Chase Boontjer, but then showed some real fight during the final round, before falling 16-7. Red Bluff put a pair of wrestlers in championships matches. Sultan Beardsley rebounded from his third place showing at the EALs to reach the 132-pound final and Dillon Reid earned a rematch at 154 with Foothill's Travis Gallegos. See 2ND, page 2B
