house back, but the response was a definitive "no." Finally, because of the exponential growth of sorority recruitment at Mizzou, the university is strategically working to expand the sorority community, which means any future property in Greek Town would first be considered for sorority expansion. Our brotherhood has thrived while living on Fraternity Hill. Members enjoy the unique balance of autonomy for social gatherings and an environment conducive to studying. We are confident that building a new chapter house on the lot at 111 E. Stewart Road is the best option for the continued growth and success of Gamma Kappa Zeta. Safety and urgency Across the country, the largest issue regarding fraternity and sorority housing is the safety of the residents. Our facility's electrical system simply does not meet needs of today's technology. Heating and plumbing pipes and fixtures throughout the house need to be replaced with more efficient and cost-effective systems. Additionally, according to the American Fire Sprinkler Association, there are 1,800 fires a year in residence halls, dormitories, and fraternity housing. Fortunately, living in collegiate housing with fire sprinklers and smoke detectors enhances an individual's chance of surviving a fire by 97%, and our new facility would meet these standards. Ever more urgent, the Columbia City Council recently voted to require all Greek chapter houses at MU to have sprinkler systems installed. a traditionaL home With a competitive edge Today's students and their parents demand more out of their housing dollars. Increasingly, students expect more space, more privacy, and more amenities. The number of apartment complexes surrounding the campus in Columbia increases each year and includes covered parking, swimming pools, and fitness rooms at very competitive rates. Further, the University has been aggressive in providing state-of-the-art residence halls for its students; for instance, Jones Hall is currently being rebuilt to accommodate today's students. The University also continues to build housing facilities on College Avenue, Virginia Avenue, and at the corner of Providence and Stadium, all suite-style and semi-suite-style rooms. More importantly, a dozen competing fraternities have undergone significant renovations or rebuilds in the last few years and that number is continuing to grow. Bottom line: Lambda Chi must keep up if we are to have a realistic hope of remaining the leader within the University of Missouri Greek community. There has never been a more perfect time for Gamma Kappa to blaze a new trail and set ourselves apart from other chapters at Mizzou. Today's brothers are working diligently to continue the legacy of Gamma Kappa on Fraternity Hill. The growing demand for Greek life and the needs of today's student converge to create an urgent need to rebuild our home. For Lambda Chi Alpha to remain the premier fraternity at Mizzou, we must rebuild our facility to attract the quality of men we have called our own for over 100 years. LCA
