The doom-and-gloom message was expected to be offset later Monday night by the candidate's wife, Melania Trump, who was taking a rare turn in the political spotlight to show a kinder, gen- tler side of her brash husband. In an unusual step for a candidate, Trump announced he would come to Cleveland and introduce her. Mrs. Trump was the first of sev- eral family members and friends who will take the stage in Cleve- land during the convention that officially kicks of the business- man's general election battle with Democrat Hillary Clinton. JULIE ZEEB — DAILY NEWS By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF A new wave of Poke- mon fever is sweeping the nation and it has arrived in Red Bluff where people are out and about playing the game. Described by some players as a hybrid between a scaven- ger hunt and a video game, the smartphone application launched July 6 and lets players get out and about while searching for charac- ters they can capture to help their team. Players are divided into three teams and the game can be played alone or with friends. The game requires players to go outside to find Pokemon — a name derived from pocket mon- sters. In addition to more than 100 species of Pokemon there are Pokemon Gyms, where play- ers battle for control, and Poke Stops, where players gather sup- plies, at interesting locations such as public art institutions, histori- cal markers and monuments. Popular places people have been spotted playing Poke- mon have included the Tehama County Superior Courthouse, the Red Bluff Post Office, Red Bluff River Park, Adobe Plaza, Dog Is- land Park and various churches around Red Bluff. Heidi Thomas of Red Bluff has two children playing the game and has seen as many as 13 to 15 people all together playing it, she said. "I think it's great because it gets them outside and gets them to exercise, as long as they are cognizant of where they're going and their surroundings," Thomas said. Servers went down off and on Saturday, but there were still a few people, including Brendan and Ashley Thomas of Red Bluff, out playing in the downtown area in the morning. Brendan was introduced to the game when a cousin got him started with the card version by giving him a few cards. "I started out with 10 and now I have about 200," Brendan said. "It's fun going with someone and also stealing someone else's Poke- mon while they're trying to catch another." While he still hasn't learned how to battle well, Brendan spends about five or six hours a day playing the game. Ashley says she spends about two or three hours a day playing.
