Please help the children in your community start the school year with their needs met. Thank you. Seeking donations for students Quartzsite Police Chief H. Ernest Renfro, who has held the position since January 2015, tendered his resignation for family reasons. His last council meeting was Tuesday, June 28th. Renfro has been com- muting on the weekends to Phoe- nix area where his family resides. His daughter is a student at Arizo- na State University. His son is on his high school's football team and his father wants to be at his games. Quartzsite Town Council held a special meeting on June 21 to approve an employment contract with William Ponce as the new police chief. Ponce was a sergeant with the police department until he and several other police officers were fired by Town Administra- tion. An out-of-court settlement was made between the officers and town for over $1 million for wrong- ful termination. Council members met Tuesday, July 12 to waive a condition in the settlement allow- ing Ponce to be rehired. Ponce is currently serving as Chief of Police for Colorado River Indian Tribes. Before leaving, Renfro appointed Lt. Mike Ewald as Acting Chief. However Council held a special meeting on July 5th to formally announce that Lieutenant Ewald is the Town of Quartzsite Acting Chief of Police. Once an independent back- ground check is completed in the next week or so, Ponce is expected to take over duties from Acting Chief Ewald. DEADLINE : WED.
