Man crashes plane into IRS office AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A software engineer furious with the Internal Revenue Service launched a suicide attack on the agency Thursday by crashing his small plane into an office build- ing containing nearly 200 IRS employees, setting off a raging fire that sent workers fleeing for their lives. At least one person in the building was missing. The FBI tentatively identified the pilot as Joseph Stack. A federal law official said investiga- tors were looking at a long anti-government screed and farewell note that he apparently posted on the Web earlier in the day as an explanation for what he was about to do. In it, the author cited run-ins he had with the IRS and ranted about the tax agency, government bailouts and corporate America's ''thugs and plunderers.'' ''I have had all I can stand,'' he wrote in the note, dated Thursday, adding: ''I choose not to keep looking over my shoulder at 'big brother' while he strips my car- cass.'' Stack, 53, also appar- ently set fire to his house about six miles from the crash site before embark- ing on the suicide flight, said two law enforcement officials, who like other authorities spoke on con- dition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on. Pakistan arrests more than a dozen KABUL (AP) — Pak- istani authorities, aided by U.S. intelligence, have apprehended more Afghan Taliban chiefs fol- lowing the capture of the movement's No. 2 figure — arrests that together represent the biggest blow to the insurgents since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. The arrests of more than a dozen Taliban lead- ers, including known associates of Osama bin Laden, came as militants fought to keep a grip on their southern stronghold of Marjah. Hundreds of militants were holding out against a six-day-old assault by 15,000 U.S., NATO and Afghan troops. Nine Taliban militants linked to al-Qaida were nabbed in three raids late Wednesday and early Thursday near the port city of Karachi, Pakistani intelligence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't supposed to release the information. Two Taliban shadow governors also were apprehended in separate raids, Afghan and Pak- istani officials said with- out giving specifics. The arrests follow the capture in Karachi of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, second only to the Taliban's one-eyed leader, Mullah Moham- mad Omar. The White House and the Pakistani army have confirmed Baradar's arrest but have released few details, including when and how he was apprehended. White House ready to push health WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House sig- naled Thursday that an aggressive, all-Democratic strategy for overhauling the nation's health care system remains a serious option, even as President Barack Obama invites Republicans to next week's televised summit to seek possible compromises. The administration's stance could set the stage for a political showdown, with Democrats struggling to enact the president's top domestic priority and Republicans trying to block what many conservatives see as government over- reach. A senior administration official said Democratic congressional leaders have nearly finished efforts to reconcile two health bills, which the House and Sen- ate passed separately last year with practically no Republican help. Obama will use their legislation to expand coverage to some 30 million and require most Americans to carry insur- ance as the basis for a pro- posal that the White House will post online by Monday, three days before the Feb. 25 summit, said the official. He spoke on the condi- tion of anonymity to discuss private negotiations. Obama says he is open to Republican ideas for changing the health care system. But many Democ- rats seriously doubt GOP leaders will support com- promises that could draw enough lawmakers from both parties to create a bipartisan majority. 8A – Daily News – Friday, February 19, 2010 343 S.
