It is being inaugu- rated by Frank Riley at his place on Pine creek. The ranch is not very strong yet, Mr. Riley having but twenty-two of the muste- line mammals in captiv- ity. The primary purpose of a skunk ranch is to grow skunks, of course. Not just to stir up a stink in the community but for the value of their pelts. At pre- vailing prices a skunk hide is worth about $1.50. Mr. Riley has his animals in an enclosure and grows them without irrigation. He has set about developing his ranch without asking for a bonus or other assistance from the county. Mr. Ri- ley will grow nothing but thoroughbred skunks. He will not attempt to cross them. It makes a skunk mad to cross him, and a mad skunk would cause a board of health to resign. —June29,1916 100 YEARS AGO...
