CONCERT Craig Morgan to take stage at State Craig Morgan will perform July 22at the State Theatre. Shasta College is pleased to present A New American Picture, an exhibition of color photographs by Doug Rickard Aug. 15 to Sept. 22 at the Shasta College Art Gallery. There will be an art- ist's lecture 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 15 in room 400 with a reception to follow at noon to 1 p.m. in building 300. This event is free and open to the public. The show depicts Amer- ican street scenes, lo- cated using the Internet platform Google Street View. Over a four-year period, Rickard took ad- vantage of Google's mas- sive image archive to vir- tually explore the roads of America looking for forgotten, economically devastated and largely abandoned places. After locating and composing scenes of urban and ru- ral decay, Rickard re-pho- tographed the images on his computer screen with a tripod-mounted camera, freeing the image from its technological origins and re-presenting them on a new documentary plane. The low-resolution im- ages that Rickard favors have a dissolved, paint- erly effect and are occa- sionally populated with figures who acknowledge the camera, but whose faces are blurred, mask- ing their identity. The pho- tographs are thus imbued with an added surrealism and anonymity, which re- inforces the isolation of the subjects and empha- sizes the effects of an in- creasingly stratified Amer- ican social structure. Doug Rickard is the founder of American Sub- urb X and These Ameri- cans, aggregating websites on contemporary photog- raphy and American his- torical and cultural pho- tographic archives. He was born in San Jose in 1968 and studied at Shasta Col- lege before transferring to UC San Diego, receiving his BA in 1994. He lives and works in Northern Califor- nia. Shasta College Art Gal- lery is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Fri- day and 6-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
