5 MU ATTENDS BURNS INSTITUTE Mu Chapter was represented at the Burns Institute by four undergraduates and one Mu Chapter young alumnus. Attending from the chapter were Camp- bell Addington '15, Johnny Longley '15, Eric Ishimaru '15, and Cameron Vela '15. Perry M. Opel '04, our Mu Chapter former HJP, served as an alumni facili- tator for the weekend leadership retreat held at the Alpine Meadows Retreats, east of Los Angeles. MU SCORES WITH HYPERLOOP Our undergraduates do some truly amazing things! Congratulations to Mu Chapter Brothers Anthony Grig- ore '12 and Rigo Orozco '12 and their UW Hyperloop research team on winning the best safety system award and also moving on to further competition. MU'S SANDBERG '12 INTERNS WITH UW INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Celebrate the 2015 Apple Cup victory! Mu Chapter has a great heritage of being involved in activi- ties on campus, including Brother Ryan Sandberg '12, who serves as an athletic training intern with UW Intercollegiate Athletics. MU NAILS FIRST PLACE IN VOLLEYBALL The UW Alpha Sigs took first place in the volleyball event portion of the annual UW Delta Delta Delta philanthropy, Spike It! Tri Delts have adopted St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as their philan- thropic recipient. Tri Delts nationally have recently announced a 10-year $60 million fundraising commit- ment to St. Jude. The Alpha Sigs are always honored to participate in Spike It! Mu Rocks! AVERAGE GPA 3.5 One of the attributes that sets 21 st Century Millennial Alpha Sigs apart from many fraternities and historically for Mu Chapter at the UW is their dozen plus years of consistent academic performance in the mid 3.5 to higher 3 point averages. This is a praise-worthy accomplishment consid- ering that this is the average for over 90 to 100 brothers. One Hundred! Numbers like these only happens when the brother- hood as a whole recognizes, acknowledges and agrees to a strictly adhered to aca- demic policy where studying and getting good grades is expected. Yes, it is still a fraternity…a social fraternity. And, there is lots of social! But the social in 21 st Century Mu Chapter happens mid-week with big parties and bands, mostly to avoid weekend party crashing from gangs that frequently wander through Greek Row on weekends. Still, even with a welcomed mid-week distraction, often every week, grades do not suffer. Why? Academics is built into the chapter's culture. The posi- tion of Scholarship Chair is taken serious- ly. Pledges are trained and woven into the scholastic fabric of the chapter from the get go. Everyone knows that you have to keep your grades up to stay in the House. We have heard that before, but they are se- rious about it. It only takes one bad grade point to start pulling the overall average down…and that is bad for the moral of the chapter and for Rush. They won't let a brother willingly fail and pull others down. If a brother has trouble, they help him. So the undergraduate brothers live up to the fraternity song…"He's a gentleman and a scholar with a heart beneath his vest." Yes, academics is a way of life at Mu, not a byproduct of fraternity living. And thanks to thousands of dollars of alumni support the Mu Chapter House is an Inter- net friendly study hotspot with more cyber upgrades planned for the near future.
