"The people from my hometown who were the leaders of my high school were Betas. I could tell on my first visit to campus that everybody respected Beta Theta Pi." Marc earned a degree in economics while he was a member of Beta and went on to earn a law degree from the University of Oklahoma as well. Marc is a lawyer by profession, and has had a varied career dealing with special projects around the globe, including advising presidents of the United States and advising foreign countries on political, economic, and financial issues. Marc has had many highlights in his professional career. "Being Ronald Reagan's National Field Counselor in 1984 and being a part of the Reagan Administration was unforgettable," Marc said. "Representing Boris Yeltsin in front of the Soviet Supreme Court, working on the Bulgarian Constitution, advising Sudan on Federal Reserve systems during their civil war, representing China during the re-opening of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and being council to George W. Bush's recount in 2000 were also great moments in his career." His advice for younger alumni and undergraduates is to follow your passion; find out what makes you really happy to go to work. Marc explained that you shouldn't get caught up in what you think you are supposed to do, but rather go where your heart and talents lead you. Marc believes that his fraternity experience was instrumental in setting him up for success. "Beta Theta Pi had a huge impact on shaping who I am today. The principles they instilled in me early in my college career and the discipline that they taught me were very impactful. Beta also taught respect for others, not just other Betas, but everyone on campus and in society. Beta also encouraged me to understand that there are causes greater than myself." Marc has many fond memories from his time in the Beta house. "Being President of the Beta house was a lot of fun. Strangely enough, chapter meetings were interesting, because many of my fraternity brothers were very insightful and therefore the debates were very constructive. I remember many of them to this day," Marc said. He also mentioned that the entire Beta experience was a wonderful part of the college years; pledgeship, Barn Dances, intramurals, and his entire senior year were quite the experiences. "My senior year we set the record for grades, we won intramurals on the last day of the last game of softball against the Delts, we had five top-10 seniors, five top-10 freshmen, and we won Sooner Scandals. It was pretty a good year." Marc still keeps in touch with his pledge brothers and was in touch with almost all of them during the recent capital campaign for the house renovations. Marc was also chapter advisor for several years, was on the Housing Corporation Board for several years, and is a member of the Executive Committee for the capital campaign. "Beta Theta Pi has been a wonderful experience. The thing they tell you, as a pledge, is that it is a network that will support you your entire life, and that has certainly been true for me. I never cease to be surprised to find out that someone in a leadership position in our state is an older or younger Beta. We're in leadership positions everywhere. I am proud that Betas consistently give back to OU, their communities, and the state." Marc lives in Norman, Oklahoma, with his wife Ann. They will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary this year. Together, they have two daughters and seven grandchildren. Marc enjoys spending time at his ranch and fishing, as well as going down to Florida. Marc also enjoys playing tennis and reading history. r. marc nuttle '71 reflects on Beta's impact on his life Joseph Albert Elk City, Okla.
