I am approaching the end of my first year serving on the Board of Governors for Alpha Delta Phi International. I did not know what to expect when I was elected because here at Washington we operate independently, with minimal involvement from the International Office. What I found is an impressive and dedicated group of men, led by our president, Stephen W. Starnes, Hamilton '80, that has re-invented its purpose and is building the infrastructure and programs to provide meaningful support, guidance, and mentoring to our chapters. The board has built a leadership development program for undergraduate chapter presidents to help them deal with current challenges of campus life. The training is delivered to chapter presidents at two events each year: Convention in August and Leadership Council in January. Our two full-time chapter service consultants work directly with chapter leaders to implement best practices for recruiting, pledge development, financial management, and literary programs. We partnered with two leading database management organizations in our industry: PCI will update our membership data and publish a new directory and OmegaFi will implement a new membership database management program that will enable better communication with our chapters and alumni. At the same time, we will be launching a new website, www.alphadeltaphi.org, with a membership portal powered by OmegaFi, called Xaipe Connect, that will allow alumni members to update their personal data and learn about upcoming events. Finally, the board has embarked on an aggressive expansion program, led by Governor Jay Flynn, Massachusetts '85. Our expansion plan is simple: expand to only the top colleges and universities within the U.S. and Canada, with an emphasis on the South and Western U.S. In the past 10 years, we have increased our chapters by 43%, adding 10 new chapters and more than doubling our undergraduate membership to over 1,200. We now have more undergraduate members than we have ever had in the 185-year history of Alpha Delta Phi! On a personal note, my youngest son, Collin Gilbert, Rocky Mountain '16, was recently initiated into our newest Affiliate at the University of Colorado.
