8A Daily News – Saturday, June 2, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Is it all right to ask Rushdy El-Ghussein, former president of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City, Mo.: God created the uni- verse for humankind. God expects us to worship him and obey his laws. We must follow his guidance on how to treat others. God for revenge? FOLLOW RULE OF JUSTICE Nothing prevents us from asking for revenge, but one must seek it in acceptable ways. The Qur'an states that peo- ple who are oppressed may and should defend themselves. In all situations and cases, there is a rule of justice: The response must not be greater than the original injury, or the victim will become at fault, guilty of oppression himself. Also, every time permission is given to respond, it is tempered with an appeal to forgive, to forgo retaliation as charity, to seek God's help with patient perseverance and prayer. So if we ask for revenge, we must limit our request to what is right and just. When Prophet Muhammad went seeking help and shel- ter from the people of Taif in Arabia, he was treated badly, ridiculed and wounded. After he left Taif, an angel came to Prophet Muhammad saying that if Muhammad wanted revenge, the angel would make the two mountains close upon those people and crush them. Prophet Muhammad's response was a clear and strong "No," and he made the fol- lowing supplication: "O God, guide the people of Taif, and I hope that one day some good and great people will come out of them." God is just and merciful and wants us to act accordingly. AVOID A VICIOUS CYCLE Vedanta (spiritual philosophy of Hinduism) is the transcen- dental reality — pure consciousness, called Brahman, the source of the manifest universe. Although Brahman per- vades the whole universe, it is not involved in its working. The workings of the phenomenal world are governed by Arvind Khetia, engineer and a Hindu: The God of Lifeline the universal law of karma, which means that every thought, word and action will, sooner or later, bring its correspond- ing reaction. Therefore, to ask God for anything is immate- rial, except that it shows the nature of one's mind. Asking for revenge is symptomatic of the violence in one's mind. If implemented, it will set off a vicious cycle of revenge that will lead to endless violence and suffering. The ultimate consequence of such a vicious cycle is well stated by Mahatma Gandhi as, "An eye for an eye and the whole world will go blind." Therefore, only with the recognition of the law of karma comes the necessary motivation for being good and doing good. This requires the spiritual transformation of one's mind by the practice of yoga and meditation as explained in the Bhagavad-Gita. Then, instead of "revenge," one's prayers will reflect compassion and forgiveness for all. Again, according to Mahatma Gandhi, "It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends, but to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion." Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me" (John 14:6 NLT). Satan's activities focus upon destroying our relationship with our lifeline. The body of Christ is also an extension of our Lord's lifeline to the Father. We are one in Christ, and Satan wants to pull us apart, causing a break in the lifeline. Chapters 14 and 15 in the Gospel of John address this issue directly. Picture this: You are drowning in the ocean and a ship comes along and someone throws you a line --- you grab the line and hold on tightly as you are being pulled to safety. You hold on with all your might, letting nothing dis- tract you from your grip of life. Suddenly a thought enters your mind. You do not like the color of the lifeline fabric (don't trust it now) or you don't like the man- ner in which it appears to be woven together. You let go of your grip, just a little, and the lifeline slips away from your fin- gers. Try as you can, it disap- pears and you are now in danger of drowning once again. You think, "Oh, if I had just held onto the lifeline, and not been distract- ed by my doubts and personal likes, I would still be safe." Christians ---- hold onto Jesus --- your lifeline. And, Christians hold onto the body of Christ – your lifeline – as we are one in Christ. Don't be so quick to lose faith in the members of the body of Christ. That's what Satan wants! He has so many ways of setting traps that can (if we allow) cause us to "toss each other aside" or let go of our love for one another. "Don't just pre- tend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold Jesus is our lifeline to the tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affec- tion, and take delight in honoring each other" (Romans 12:9,10 NLT). Is it OK to disagree? Is it ok to view things dif- ferently at times? Yes. But, don't let go of your love for your brethren, and do not forget that we are one in Christ. Hold on tight to your love those in the body of Christ. "Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions" (1 John 3:18 NLT). for What we do not want is to "drop" the lifeline. What we do need to "drop" or let go of is our focus upon disagree- ments, the opinions that separate our communion together, and anything petty. Petty is not pretty in the eyes of God. Any grudges or unforgiveness must be dropped. "Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace" (Ephesians 4:2,3 NLT). If we see a brother or sister about to drop their hold on the lifeline, we can grasp their hands and hold on together. We need not stand by and watch another Christian go under the storm waters of life. We humans tend to shy away from those who treat us poorly. We can learn much from a famil- iar animal. Dogs are known as man's best friend. They are also known to return to their master even after much abuse. They are willing to lick the hand that has Patricia Martin GodTalk beaten them, follow them until their body is so weak they are ready to drop, and wait for their master days upon end. Yet, we human beings are (all at differ- ent degrees) too often ready to cut members of the body of Christ out of our circle of friends because of petty differences and personality traits. Memories of previous offence and hurt feel- ings often over-ride our determination to hold onto the lifeline. What is the lifeline made of? It is made of God's provision for salvation through Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Body of Christ, and is held together by the precious blood of Jesus Christ our Savior. Hold on Child of God. Let nothing separate you from the love of God and the Body of Christ – your fellow Christian brothers and sisters. Your life depends upon God's lifeline. Hold on and be available to hold onto the family of God, lov- ing each one enough to help him maintain a firm and life sustain- ing grip on God. And please introduce many to the Lord in 2012. Jesus is coming very soon. May we each one be about our Father's business. Patricia Martin leads the ministry God's Precious Jewels, a Tehama County based ministry that cares for the physical and educational needs of Native American children nationwide. She has recently founded the local Jehovah Rapha ministry of meeting for those healed long term of catastrophic illness. Aviation Vacation Bible School off at Amazing Wonders Aviation!
