4B Daily News – Saturday, June 2, 2012 FEATURES Parents tired of providing taxi Dear Annie: My husband and I have five adult children between us, all making a good living. Some of our children expect us to pay their airfare to come visit us, in addi- tion to picking them up at the airport, being their taxi service so they can go out drink- ing at night and letting them use our car. At no time does anyone put gas in the car or even treat us to a cheap breakfast. Annie's Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar During a recent visit, we made reservations for dinner with one son, his girlfriend, their daughter (who lives near- by) and the daughter's boyfriend. That morning, my husband drove them to the beach (10 miles away). They then called to say they ate a late lunch and asked that we push back the reservation and that my husband pick them up from the daughter's house and bring them home to change. It seems the daughter didn't want to drive the 10 miles to our house. I adamantly said no to my 74-year-old husband. These ''kids'' are so self-absorbed that they think nothing of forcing us to accommodate their sched- ules with no thought to ours. I have told my husband that from now on, the kids must rent their own car when visiting. I'm tired of being their private chauffeur. Am I overreacting? — Selfish Guests No Longer Welcome Dear Guests: Of course not. If your children are old enough would be if they treated their folks to a meal once in a while to thank them for their hospital- ity. divorced woman in my 50s and the mother of two beautiful daughters. When they were born, we chose to pass on my first name to both girls as a middle name. It's been a fam- ily tradition for the past four generations. Recently, my eldest daugh- ter informed me that she legally replaced her middle name with her maiden name. I was stunned that the name I passed on to her with pride was cut out entirely and for- ever. We are on good terms, and I don't believe she intend- ed to hurt me. And I don't have a problem with her choosing her father's sur- name. Normally, I'm pretty laid back, but this one stings. I'd like to ask why she made this choice, but I'm afraid it might make her think I'm too sensitive and she won't share future deci- Dear Annie: I am a to have kids of their own, they should not need to be driven around by their parents. But we recommend a tactful approach. For the next visit, simply say, ''We wish we could pick you up at the airport, but it won't be possible. We suggest you rent a car so you can have your indepen- dence.'' You also can mention how nice it sions with me. I keep hoping there is a sensible, rational reason that would relieve some of the hurt. Perhaps if I get it out in the open, I can let it go. Any thoughts? — Name-Dropped It's OK to ask, as long as you don't get teary-eyed and make her feel guilty. Or per- haps she confided her rea- sons to her sister and you would feel more comfortable asking your younger child. But be prepared to accept with equanimity an answer you may not like. Dear Name-Dropped: ing'' wanted to know how to ask his parents about his inheritance so he could plan his retirement accordingly. Dear Annie: ''Wonder- K: I've had atopic eczema since I was a kid. It comes and goes. But lately the itching and dryness have got- ten worse. What can I do? Recently, our son demanded his share of his ''inheritance.'' The ramifica- tions of this have been heart- breaking. Because of money already given to him, we made the difficult decision to exclude him from any further inheritance at our death. He received a paid-in-full state- ment that said, ''This is your share that you demanded via an attorney, notarized and recorded through the courts.'' sleeping dogs lie. You will get yours (if anything is left) at your parents' death. Pre- pare and plan for your future yourself. — Sadder and Wiser So, ''Wondering,'' let children with atopic eczema still have the problem as adults. In addition to itching and dry- ness, parts of your skin may become red and possibly covered by tiny bumps or blisters. Over time, areas of your skin may become thicker, scaly or flaky. You may have noticed changes in skin color, or crusty patches. Chronic stress appears to affect the immune system in a way that makes eczema worse in some peo- ple. DEAR READER: Eczema is a common type of skin inflamma- tion, and about half of to prevent or reduce eczema flare- ups. Avoid exposure to: • Extreme temperatures • Dry air • Perfumed products • Bubble baths Use blankets and clothing made of cotton. Avoid more irritating fab- rics such as wool. Avoid stiff syn- thetics such as polyester. After showering or bathing, pat dry (rather than rub). Then apply a moisturizing cream or lotion. Use a humidifier to add moisture to indoor air during the winter heating season. Sometimes eczema remains bothersome despite these steps. In that case, see your doctor. He or she may prescribe a mild- or medium- • Harsh soaps Creams relieve eczema's itch DEAR DOCTOR. Dr. K by Anthony L. Komaroff, M.D. There are many things you can do Two potent and relatively new ointments and creams are tacrolimus and pimecrolimus. They have advantages over corticosteroid ointments or creams when the eczema is on the face or neck, or in folds of the skin (like the inside of the elbow). Treatment with ultraviolet (UV) light may be another option for you. Skin affected by long-term eczema is more vulnerable to infections. Scratching the itchy patches increases this risk, so try to avoid the temptation to scratch. Medicines that reduce itching (mainly antihistamines) can be helpful. We have more information on eczema in our Special Health Report, "Skin Care and Repair." (Learn more about this report at AskDoctorK.com, or call 877-649- 9457 toll-free to order it.) Call your doctor if you have an area of skin that is red and very itchy. Also, call if your skin is cracked, blistered or painfully dry, or if you think it is infected. strength corticosteroid ointment or cream that you can apply to the affected areas of your skin. Sometimes, in severe cases, your doctor will prescribe a short course of oral steroids or even stronger drugs. While these drugs can have serious side effects, for many of my patients the benefit has been worth the risk. Dr. Komaroff is a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School.
