Mu Chapter Strand of Pearls 2 M arni Walner Waters '01 believes in having passion and putting yourself out there, and that's exactly what she did when she joined AEPhi. When arriving at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, she knew that she wanted to join a sorority and found AEPhi Mu Chapter. Through her college days, she never guessed that AEPhi would be such an integral part of her life to this day. After graduating, Marni worked for AEPhi national as a traveling educational consultant, TEC, and worked with chapters from Atlantic to Pacific. While she was a TEC, she shared the bond of sisterhood with members and volunteers at each campus. "It was wonderful being a consultant because it opened me up to what AEPhi could be as an alumna, locally and nationally," Marni says. "I've made many AEPhi friends for a lifetime and developed relationships with women I met in my travels and from volunteering." Proving that the bond of sisterhood lasts long after college, Marni now works as a chapter advisor for her alma mater. For 15 years, as a member and volunteer, she has seen this chapter thrive and continue achieving new heights. "My goals as an advisor change each year, because the women are different and their goals and priorities may change year to year," she says. "I want to help them achieve their goals and be a sounding board for these women, give them autonomy, and make sure they are true to the foundation and values of Alpha Epsilon Phi." Marni encourages alumnae and even undergraduates to find out how they can contribute on a local and national level. She suggests reaching out to the national office to express interest and determine the level of commitment that works best for you. "It's important to feel confident in your college experiences," she says. "AEPhi will give you this skills to help pave the way into the real world." Marni, her husband, Chris, their children, Jemma and Ian, and their dogs, Saki and Stella, live in Vernon Hills, Ill. She works for NorthShore University HealthSystem as a practice manager for the medical group. Marni enjoys spending time with her family and finding ways to stay involved with her community. She can be reached at mlwalner@yahoo.com. Thank You, Loyal Alumnae W e wish to extend our gratitude to the alumnae who have chosen to support Alpha Epsilon Phi. Your gifts make it possible for our undergraduates to reside in a safe and comfortable home while remaining competitive at the University of Illinois.
