SIGMA PHI EPSILON PARENT'S WEEKEND AND ALUMNI GOLF TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS O n the weekend of April 1-3, Alabama Beta hosted its first spring Parent's Weekend, along with our third annual alumni and parents golf tournament. On Friday, April 1, brothers and parents gathered for an evening social at Innisfree's The District Room. The night was full of laughter, excitement, and storytelling as everyone enjoyed music from The Trey Lewis Band. The next day, brothers, alumni, and, for the first time ever, parents, enjoyed a morning of golf at Ol' Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa. Over 100 alumni, brothers, and parents played in this year's tournament, which was our largest crowd since we began hosting this event. The tournament was won by John Berg '18, his father, Richard, Mack Padgett '18, and his father, Alan. Alumni who attended the event include Joey Judge '14, Joe Park '14, Landon Laxson '15, Robert Brunner '90, Cal LaGroue '06, Ryne Schlitz '07, Neal West '90, Rob Poldoski '88, Paul Robertson '69, Jim Parker '69, and Steve Mace '71. The weekend concluded with a brunch at the Chapter House on Sunday, where flowers were given away to the mothers whose names were drawn from a raffle. Our next Alumni Weekend will be on Saturday, September 10, and Family Weekend will be September 23-25. We hope you will be able to attend one, or both, of these events. Brian Jaros '17, his father, David, Brice Morpeth '17, and his father, Fred, participate in the alumni and parents golf tournament. T he success of the Alabama Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon has been second to none since our return to campus, but this past year has been one of the most successful. Our Chapter has become the fourth-largest Fraternity on campus, gaining some of the most intelligent and well-rounded men at the University of Alabama. With 142 active brothers, from states all across the nation, our membership is the largest in Chapter history. SIGMA CLASS SECURES HIGHEST GPA IN CHAPTER HISTORY Last semester, our Chapter achieved a GPA of 3.5, one of the highest since 2010. This was the highest GPA out of all IFC fraternities on the Alabama campus. Our fall new member class secured an overall GPA of 3.51, which is the highest GPA of any incoming Sigma class in Alabama Beta history. CHAPTER AWARDED FOR GREEK LEADERSHIP ON CAMPUS Alabama Beta added several awards to its impressive list this semester. In February, our Chapter received the Talent Power Excellence Award and the Excelsior Award for finance at the annual Carlson Leadership Academy for maintaining impressive numbers and excellence in financial duties the past year. Later that month, the University awarded Alabama Beta the outstanding service and philanthropy, educational programming, and risk management awards at the UA Greek Excellence Awards. This marks the second year in a row that Alabama Beta received these awards. MEMBERS BOND THROUGH SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES Brothers bonded earlier this semester with a weekend trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and a formal in New Orleans. Along with these two fun, memorable trips, brothers participated in paintball and other community service activities in the Tuscaloosa area. Alabama Beta looks forward to what the future holds. Thank you for helping make our Chapter what it is today and we hope to see you soon.
