THE RED DOOR Dr. Bobby Brunner '90 Reflects on Rewarding Experience in Alabama Beta F or many of us, our Greek life experience was a defining element of our college career. For Dr. Bobby Brunner '90, his years in SigEp were just that. "Neither of my parents had gone to college in the U.S. and they were both from Switzerland, so I did not consider the fraternity life as an option coming to UA," he says. "It was when Richard Aldridge '88 extended the olive branch and encouraged me to get involved with SigEp that I joined. Coming from out of state, I really didn't know anyone on campus, so it was great to develop a core group of friends in Alabama Beta who I could lean on for support during my time at the University." Bobby was a zealous member of Alabama Beta and served as chairman of various committees in the Fraternity. "The invaluable skills I developed while leading these committees served me well later in life and paved the way for much of my professional success," Bobby says. "The fact that you had so many different individuals with skills and talents in different areas was one of the great aspects of Alabama Beta, but they always had your back as you went through learning experiences. It was nice to make mistakes with a group that could help you learn in a positive way from those mistakes." As an alumnus, Bobby stays connected with Alabama Beta and he is proud of the success that the active Chapter has cultivated over the years. He encourages alumni to remember their Alabama Beta roots and be a driving force in the Chapter's continued excellence. "There are a lot of great things in life, but your days at Alabama were an unparalleled experience made even more special by your SigEp brothers. It is our responsibility as alumni to provide future generations with this same rewarding experience in Alabama Beta. Contributing your time and efforts to the Chapter is an opportunity to help others who are following in our path to grow and to give back to an entity that helped us become who we are today." Bobby works at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a professor and vice chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. As a physician, Bobby specializes in the rehabilitation of individuals who have sustained a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, which includes seeing patients clinically, teaching residents, and doing research in these patients' population. "I have been very fortunate in my career to work with a wonderful group of faculty, residents, and administrators over the years," he says. Bobby enjoys playing golf, going to the Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham, and playing tennis with his daughter, Sabrina (12). He and his wife, Susan, have three other children: Robert Augustus "Gus" (17), who will attend UA next year and who Bobby hopes will become an Alabama Beta SigEp, Pierce (15), and Nicholas (9). "What we enjoy most as a family is traveling, and we generally do that several times a year," he says. "We recently did an African safari, which was awesome for the kids, and this summer we will go on a sea kayaking and camping trip in Fiji with a couple of Australian guides for a few weeks. Of course, I tend to never miss an Alabama football game, so my fall weekends are taken up traveling with the Crimson Tide." You can contact Bobby at rbrunner@uabmc.edu.
