Rodeo FROM PAGE 1 Curry took the podium without any prepared notes, thanking his fam- ily, his teammates, every- one in the organization. He also expressed shock for the moment. "To be the first unani- mous MVP award winner, I don't even know how to put into words. It's a huge honor," he said. "I'm out here playing the game and doing what I love to do and what I've been blessed to do and given the talents to do. You never know exactly how it's go- ing to unfold and you just have that faith and drive. To have this and that spe- cial attachment to being the first unanimous MVP award winner is definitely special." Curry honored his fam- ily, owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, the team's front office, Myers, Kerr, his teammates — and even his in-laws. To his teammates he said: "Hope you take a moment to appreciate the bond that we have. ... No team has done what these 15 guys on this stage has done — in the history of the game. It's hard to wrap your mind around that." Curry pulled things back to the job at hand in conclusion: "Thank you very much for this award. Thank you for supporting us every day. Let's win a championship." Before the ceremony, Kerr admitted he didn't ex- pect the unanimous voting. "I'm surprised," he said. "I couldn't imagine any- body not voting him first, but there always seems to be somebody who has to stand out." Kerr believes that speaks to how special Curry's sea- son was. "He won the MVP last year and his numbers im- proved dramatically," Kerr said. "It's obvious we had a magical run and people no- ticed that." San Antonio Spurs for- ward Kawhi Leonard, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year, was sec- ond with 634 points and Cleveland's James was third with 631. The Okla- homa City Thunder's Rus- sell Westbrook (486) and Kevin Durant (147) were fourth and fifth. Warriors forward Dray- mond Green (50 points) was seventh, receiving two second-place votes, six fourth-place votes and 18 fifth-place votes. A first-place vote is worth 10 points with seven points for second place, five for third place, three for fourth place and one for fifth place. Curry led the league in scoring at 30.1 points per game while leading the Warriors to an all-time best record of 73-9. Curry also obliterated his NBA record for 3-pointers in a season by making 402, exceeding his previous mark by 116. Curry is the 11th player to win the MVP award in consecutive seasons and only the third point guard to do it, joining Magic Johnson (1989, '90) and Steve Nash (2005, '06). Theotherstowinconsec- utive MVPs are Bill Russell (1961, '62, '63), Wilt Cham- berlain (1966, '67, '68), Ka- reem Abdul-Jabbar (1971, '72 and 1976, '77), Moses Malone (1982, '83) Larry Bird (1984, '85, '86), Michael Jordan (1991, '92), Tim Dun- can (2002, '03) and James (2009, '10 and 2012, '13). MVP FROM PAGE 1 would have a big sixth in- ning when they loaded the bases with no outs. But- ton singled and Sinclair doubled, putting runners at second and third. Ryan Gamboa was hit by the sec- ond pitch of his at-bat. Clawson struck out for the first out, and Evan Tanner was promptly beaned, scoring Button. Tweedt had an infield sin- gle scoring Sinclair. Ruedi was able to get both Lane Pritchard and Austin Youngblood to pop up to end the threat, leaving the Spartans still down two af- ter six innings. Sinclair did not allow an Oroville runner past sec- ond base until the top of the eighth. With one out in the top of the seventh, Button and Sinclair hit a single and double, respectively. Gam- boa hit a shot into left-cen- ter that looked like it would tie the game, but Kevin Shillig ran the ball down, keeping Button at second. With two outs, Claw- son was hit and Tanner delivered, driving a two- strike pitch up the middle to score Sinclair and send the game to extra innings. The Tigers were able get runners at first and third with two outs in the eighth. Button had two strikes on the batter and Oroville put on a first and third play. Button stepped off and threw to first where Gam- boa threw a laser to Sin- clair, who tagged out the runner for the third out. In the bottom of the eighth Ruedi got the first two Spartan batters to strike out. With two outs Youngblood singled and stole second on the very next pitch. Peyton Edwards hit the second pitch into center field, scoring Young- blood for the walk-off win. "After a rough start I am really proud of how the boys battled back and found a way to win," said coach Ryland Sanders. Red Bluff will play Fri- day against the winner of Tuesday's game between No. 2 Foothill and No. 7 Shasta. Spartans FROM PAGE 1 ing the Warriors' 132-125 overtime victory and said he doesn't know if it'll pro- vide fuel for his team or not as it faces elimination. In any case, he's not con- cerned. "Draymond does a lot of talking," Stotts said via conference call Tuesday. "That's what he does. We'll worry about our business and go about our business. Really, whatever he says doesn't have much of an impact on us." But what Green does on the court does have an impact, and although fairly obscured by Curry's 40-point performance for the ages, the power for- ward was generally spec- tacular in a supporting role. His Game 4 line: 21 points, nine rebounds, four steals, five assists, seven blocked shots and just two turnovers. Even though he picked up a technical foul and also had five personal fouls late in the fourth quarter and overtime, he also finished with a flour- ish defensively. "I thought Steph's per- formance overshadowed a lot of guys," Kerr said. "But No. 1, a brilliant per- formance from Draymond. He's the only player in the league who can do what he did in terms of filling up the entire stat sheet and impacting the game the way he did at both ends." Warriors FROM PAGE 1 while striking out three. In his past two starts, Manaea has allowed 12 runs and 17 hits. Boston got the scoring going early. Betts led off the bottom of the first with his fifth homer of the season and Ramirez added a two-run shot later in the inning, his fourth of the year. Shaw added his fourth of the season in the fifth in- ning. O'Sullivan was called up on Friday, taking the roster spot of Henry Owens, who was sent to Triple-A Paw- tucket. With big run support, O'Sullivan allowed seven hits through five innings, before giving up five hits and four runs in the sixth. Billy Butler had three hits and Coco Crisp two RBIs to lead Oakland. Trainer'sRoom Athletics: IF/OF Mark Canha (back strain) and RHP Liam Hendriks (strained right triceps) are on the 15-day disabled list. The A's recalled RHP An- drew Triggs, LHP Dan- iel Coulombe from Triple- A Nashville and added IF Tyler Ladendorf to the ac- tive roster, which has been depleted by injuries.
