iii iii iii iii iii 2 ALPHA DELTA HILITES CALLING ALUMNAE AUTHORS! I would like to request all Alpha Delta authors to participate in a new endeavor we are hoping to start at the chapter house. Recently, we learned that there are numerous Alpha Delta alumnae who have written books. We want to start collecting the hard copies of the books to have on display at the chapter house. If you have a published work that we can add to our Alpha Delta library, please contact me at christyehren@ gmail.com. I hope this finds everyone enjoying the spring season. We continue to encourage alumnae to please stop by the chapter when you are in town to see the wonderful work taking place at Alpha Delta. Karen Story, Alpha Theta '81 left her hometown of 800 residents for the Vanderbilt University campus only knowing one person. After going through sorority recruitment with a new college friend, she found a new home and family with the women of Gamma Phi Beta. In her 35 years as a member of the sorority, Karen has been active in various leadership positions, both as an undergraduate and alumna. Her first leadership position as pledge director honed her public speaking skills and grew her confidence. As an alumna, Karen accepted a position as an officer with the international office, traveling to different chapters. "After I became an international officer, traveling and attending conventions, the full impact of our sisterhood really hit me. I am most proud that Gamma Phi is strong across the country, yet each chapter is unique and has different strengths that make them awesome chapters," she said. Karen serves as the finance advisor for Alpha Delta. "When I was contacted about this opportunity, the timing was just right. I'd just wrapped up two years as president of P.E.O., so I knew I'd have a bit more free time," she said. "I had been involved non-stop since joining in 1981, from holding local alumni chapter offices in Nashville, to working with the colonization of the chapter at Southeast Missouri State, to 12 years as an international officer. I was thrilled when Jenn Wood, St. Louse University '08 contacted me because I truly believe that membership is a lifelong commitment." Connecting and mentoring a younger generation of Gamma Phi Betas has been a truly rewarding experience for Karen. "I've enjoyed reconnecting with the undergraduates," she said, "I'm glad the chapter is showing such grace as I am slowly learning about running a chapter of 320 women." Karen encourages all alumnae to find ways, no matter how big or small, to be involved with Alpha Delta or another Gamma Phi Beta chapter. "I don't believe sisters are aware of all the opportunities that don't require a huge time commitment. Contacting someone to see if there is a short-term need will yield lots of results!" Karen and her husband of nearly 25 years live in Paducah, Kentucky. They have three children: Alex, who is attending Texas A&M; Zack, who is studying aviation at Southern Illinois University; and Kate, a high school junior and basketball player. When Karen has free time, she volunteers for her daughter's school, stays active in her church, travels with her family, and cheers on the many college sports teams her family supports.
