Celebrating Chapter Involvement Pericles Scholarship Awarded at Alumni Barbecue THE FLATIRON Striving to be a Balanced Man Michael Polmear '10 Shares Alumni Impact on His Life " What you leave behind is not what is engraved on stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others." — Pericles E very year, Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters throughout the country provide select incoming male students with The Balanced Man Scholarship, honoring their achievements and demonstrating the Fraternity's commitment to scholarship. Michael Polmear '10 first discovered Colorado Alpha through applying for the scholarship, but it wasn't until he became a member that he found out how much more the Fraternity had to offer: close friendships, a sense of belonging, and opportunities to grow as a leader. As an undergraduate member, the brotherhood of Colorado Alpha brought Michael great pride. "It was a great responsibility to take care of our Chapter," he said. "We earned a Buchanan Cup and were proud to represent Colorado Alpha nationally." Michael served as both Chapter president and senior marshal on the standards board during his collegiate years, playing an active role in the Chapter's success. Membership in SigEp was a vital resource during Michael's time in Boulder and served as a springboard for his future. With a degree from CU in chemical and biological engineering, he pursued his master's degree in biomedical engineering at Tufts University. "My Fraternity connections helped me with my first job as an engineer in Boulder and introduced me to Army medicine," he said. Michael is now a medical services corps officer in the United States Army and a medical student at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences—the Department of Defense's medical school. Colorado Alpha's alumni network has always been a great tool and support system for Michael. "We are fortunate to have a devoted, core group of local alumni who keep the Chapter's interests in mind," he said. "Chris Bittman '85, John Dockstader '87, Andrew Schneider '06, Gert Van Moorsel '82, Kevin Theroux '91, Steve Money '80, Bill Neidt '73, Chris Gassman '04, and Kurt Fisher '09 were all generous with their time and helped shape our Chapter during my undergraduate years." Now an alumnus, Michael tries to stay connected to the Chapter through seeing brothers who live on the East Coast as well as reuniting at weddings. Michael married his high school sweetheart, Stephanie, who is also a SigEp Golden Heart. The couple lives in the Washington, D.C., area, where Stephanie works as a high school math teacher and Michael attends medical school. When not busy pursuing his doctorate, he enjoys running, cycling, climbing, and traveling. You can connect with Michael at michael.polmear@colorado.edu or on LinkedIn.
