10.75" H Theta Provides Lifelong Memories to Jonalee Young McLaughlin '74 Alumna Gives Back to the Future of Alpha Mu F or Jonalee Young McLaughlin '74, the chapter house always felt like a home. During her time at the University of Missouri, every Theta had the opportunity to live in the house and meet women of different ages and paths. She understands this campaign is more than a renovated home—it's also about strengthening sisterhood by making space for a large chapter membership. So far, she is thoroughly impressed by the outdoor living space and kitchen renovations, but recognizes there is still plenty of work to be done. "I would love for the sophomore class to have the opportunity to get to know their fellow sisters by living together in the house their second year at MU," Jonalee says. "That is the best way to learn about each other and make lifetime friendships. Supporting the capital campaign will help make this happen." As an undergraduate, Jonalee gained many lifelong skills. Her sisters encouraged her to get her studying done first. "School was my job at that point, and Theta helped me put it first in importance," Jonalee says. There are plenty of fun memories she wishes she could relive too, such as singing Theta songs, Mizzou football games, Homecoming, and dances. Her favorite memory of all, however, is of lying on the landing outside "Cracker Box Room" and solving all of the problems of the world. In the past four years, Jonalee's member class has started having an annual reunion—this year in Dallas, Texas. Everyone agrees it's been thrilling to renew friendships and their shared history. Because of the strong ties from her undergraduate years, her friendships are unwavering. "The Theta Chapter at MU has always valued academics, tremendous participation in campus activities, and great success all around," Jonalee says. "I think supporting this campaign will help keep the Theta tradition alive and well." Jonalee and her husband, Paul, live in Kansas City, Mo. She is a retired pediatric physical therapist and is involved in the City Union Mission's "Women Who've Changed the Heart of the City" fundraiser, PEO, bible study, yoga, and arts and crafts. But her favorite activity of all is spending time with her family: Paul and children—John and Lisa McLaughlin, Cara McLaughlin '04, and Steven and Anna McLaughlin McKee '06. Being "Meme" to her two grandsons, Aidan and Everett, brings her an overabundance of joy. This semester, nine members are studying abroad in countries all over the world, including England, Japan, and New Zealand. With more women being accepted into prominent organizations and programs around campus, Thetas seem to find their way into every aspect of Mizzou life. We kicked off the semester with Founders Day on Saturday, January 30, where we opened our doors to Alpha Mu alumnae for a brunch in the newly renovated basement. Maddie McMillan '13, Chief Executive Officer, took a look back at 2015 and presented a slideshow, showing just how much Thetas had accomplished in the year. Then, Ritualist Courtney Famuliner '14 reviewed the founding history of our Alpha Mu Chapter in a quick presentation. The brunch ended with the singing of Theta songs and performing of ritual. The food was delicious, the decorations were fabulous, and seeing so many generations of Thetas in one room was absolutely priceless. A huge thank-you to all who attended—it was a pleasure having you back in our home. February brought the annual campus-wide RAMS! competition (Rockin' Against Multiple Sclerosis) benefiting the MS Institute of Mid-Missouri. Greek chapters at Mizzou acquire points through service and philanthropy as well as through a lip sync dance competition. Our chapter proudly won second place in RAMS! this year through outstanding participation in these events! The rest of the semester holds many exciting opportunities for Theta! Greek Week events wrapped up, for which we were paired with the men of Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Our spring philanthropy events, CASA Carnival and Bump, Set, Kite, are also ways for us to spread the widest influence for good. We enjoy the chance to support Mid-Missouri CASA and the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation through the donations we get from these two fundraising events.
