COMMUNITY NEWS A STAFF REPORT COMMUNITY NEWS Classes for Foster/Adoptive Parents Boys and Girls Homes of N.C., Inc., a non-profit organization, works everyday to promote awareness of the devastating effects of child abuse and neglect in southeastern North Carolina. We need foster and/or adoptive parents who are dedicated to assuring that our foster and/or adoptive children get the love, support and commitment they need to grow into healthy, successful adults. Requirements to become a foster and/ or adoptive parent with Boys & Girls Homes of N.C., Inc. are: must be over the age of 21; pass a criminal history check and federal background check; complete training of 36 hours with Boys & Girls Homes of N.C., Inc.; complete physicals and TB tests; and pass a fire inspection of their residence. They must also have adequate living space, demonstrate adequate income to meet the needs of their own family, have their own transportation and the ability to work as a team. In addition, they must have a high school diploma or GED. Most importantly though, beyond basic requirements, a successful foster/adoptive parent needs to have determination, patience, humor and love for children, regardless of their background. Boys & Girls Homes of N.C., Inc. will be hosting an open house/ informational meeting on Tuesday, June 12 at 6 p.m. The necessary trainings will begin June 19 and will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-9 p.m. Both the open house and the classes are located at Partnership for Children of Cumberland County, 351 Wagoner Dr., Fayetteville. Special Olympics Torch Run North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30 at the Sheriff's Annex at 1515 S. Eastern Blvd. Runners will meet at the Sheriff's Annex at 6 a.m. They will be transported by vans to the Robeson County line where the torch run begins and will end at the Fayetteville Police Department. Gatorade and water will be provided. Free T-shirts will be given to the runners. Aaron Curry Hosts First Annual Curry Faith & Football Classic Fayetteville native and Oakland Raiders linebacker, Aaron Curry, will be hosting the inaugural Curry Faith & Football Classic this summer to help provide instruction and encouragement to his hometown's student athletes. The complimentary camp will be held on Saturday, July 7, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Daskyll Stadium and the Tokay Fields behind Reid Ross Classical School. Reid Ross Classical School is located at 3200 Ramsay St., Fayetteville, NC 28301. This camp will entail a non-contact day of instruction provided by a number of NFL players and local high school football coaches. Each participant will receive an event T-shirt, Pretzel Crisps, Powerade, lunch provided by Papa John's and a chance to win prizes donated by Stone Theatres. The aim of the Classic is to provide local youth the opportunity to work on their football and teamwork skills, while building poise both on and off the field. As a Fayetteville native, Aaron shares a connection with the student athletes of his hometown. The Classic is Aaron's proactive approach at helping to develop both the athletic prowess and spiritual virtues of Fayetteville's youth. Camp registration began Monday, May 14, and is currently registering the first 400 children who are 14-18 years old, or high school seniors. Parents and student athletes can find both the registration and waiver forms at www.aaroncurry51.com. Those interested in participating should complete the registration form online by June 15. Additionally, participants must submit the waiver of liability in person on the morning of July 7.
