It was an unpopular decision, coming from Missouri, but one that ultimately paid off. Lindsey graduated with two degrees from KU—a B.A. in communication studies and one in political science —and followed up those accomplishments by attending law school at the California Western School of Law. Lindsey's hard work and dedication paid off as she now works as a public defender for San Diego County. "I take great pride in my job," Lindsey said. "I'm a trial attorney, so I really enjoy fighting for individuals who need help and need someone in their corner as an advocate. I represent people who can't always afford someone to do that for them. I'm grateful for the skills I learned at KU and in law school allowing me to do what I can for a positive outcome in the case and allow that person to be successful in the future." In addition to her schooling, Lindsey gained a lot of knowledge from her time in Sigma Kappa that she uses today. "I definitely learned a lot about myself during those years, as well as lessons on leadership and communication. I don't think I would have excelled in my career if I hadn't been a member of the sorority. I have been approached at work about leading various training sessions because of the leadership skills I gained at Xi Chapter. Sigma Kappa was a foundation for me to do well in my job today." For Xi's current membership and recent graduates, Lindsey advises them to do something they love. "I love my job, but I have friends who wake up every day who aren't so lucky. Be sure to try different things and explore various areas of interest. You don't want to pigeonhole yourself into a career you don't love. Stay hungry." Even as a San Diego resident, Lindsey still maintains her love for KU basketball. If given the opportunity, she would relive the night KU won the National Championship in 2008. "Some friends and I had traveled to San Antonio for the Final Four game, and after we won, we knew we had to get back to Lawrence for the final game so we could be there if we won. I was with a group of Sigma Kappas during the final game, and after we won I remember running from campus to Mass Street. It was like being on top of the world. Such an amazing memory I'll never forget." You can contact Lindsey at lindsey.willard10@gmail.com. Page 3
