Main St. Quartzsite Open Tues. thru Sat. 9-3 928-927-4223 ASSESSOR RESPONDS In answer to Mr. Hart's letter of March 16th letter to the editor: The State of Arizona has a very complex tax system. The follow- ing information, we hope, will help taxpayers understand how proper- ties are valued in Arizona. Arizona does not go by the purchase price of property; we use an array of sales indicating a mean sales price. The assessors are required to use all qualified sales from January 1, 2014 through the last day in June of 2015 to set values for 2017. This method is referred to as a mass appraisal which is used by all counties in the State of Arizona (not just La Paz). Mr. Hart purchased his property in late 2015, so his sale will be a part of the studies for the 2018 valuations. Our office does not ignore State Statues. We are governed by the Arizona Department of Revenue, and values must be in compli- ance before we are given permis- sion to mail Notice of Values to property owners. In 2012, taxpayers voted in favor of Proposition 117 and beginning in tax year 2015, unless there are changes made to a property, the limited property value can only go up a maximum of five percent (5%) a year. The limited property value is used by taxing authorities to ar- rive at tax dollars. The Assessor's Office places a value on your prop- erty and does not compute tax dol- lars. If you should have any questions regarding your property please feel free to contact our office.
