Jenn Quartzsite, AZ ROCK FIESTA MEMORIES My husband Paul and I recently were fortunate enough to attend the much talked about Latino Rock Fiesta held at Desert Gardens showgrounds. Although not our usual type of music, we wanted to see for ourselves just what all the hullaballoo was about--many people asking what was it going to be like, how much did they have to worry etc. and whether it was going to affect our community in a nega- tive way. So we went both nights, and our experiences were nothing short of wonderful. The music was loud, you cannot deny that, but a lot of the people who live in that area got free passes; many of them were seen throughout the fiesta checking out all the booths for merchandise and food, and dancing along to the music like we were. Most people who live in town that we talked to after the event, said it didn't bother them very much and only for a short time. We couldn't understand the words to the songs, but like they say, music is the universal language, and the thousands who attended the Fiesta sure loved their music!! We met some very nice Mexican people who hugged us and thanked ROCKS IN MY HEAD The World's Greatest Rock, Prospecting & Outdoor Education Company RICE RANCH SPACE A37 Quartzsite, AZ OPEN Nov. thru March GOLD, SILVER, BUY & SELL Unique Rocks & Fossils Cabs - Rough - Slabs METEORITES-PETRIFIED WOOD Dino Bone & Mammoth Ivory Animal Parts & Leather Native American Artifacts Jewelry - Supplies - Beads GOLD PROSPECTING ROCKHOUNDING - LAPIDARY New-Used-Parts-Supplies Books-Maps-Local Site Info CONSIGNMENTS - RENTALS CLASSES - DEMOS QUARTZSITE PROSPECTING T-Shirts, Totebags, & More! We met several visitors from L.A. who said how wonderful it was and how well organized. They said they don't even go to any concerts in L.A. because of all the gangs, drugs, and fights. They were so impressed they want to come back again if it comes back here. We noticed that the organizer, Hal Davidson, went the extra mile to insure a safe and friendly environment for so many people coming to the Fiesta. He and his crew did an excellent job setting everything up and having it run as smoothly as it did. Special thanks to all the law enforcement and security staff at the event who helped keep watch to make sure there were no problems. And also to the Fire Dept. for maintaining a first aid station. From what we have heard since the event, there was only a couple of minor issues- -so kudos to everyone who made this such a successful and fantastic experience. The highlight of the last night for us happened after the headliner Caifanes performed their awesome music for us. By that time there must have been thousands of fans in front of the stage. The lights to the stage were off and the band was getting their equipment ready to take off the stage. We were just turning to leave at the back of the Corner of Moon Mt. & Cowell • Quartzsite • 928-927-5400 QUARTZSITE'S ONLY YEAR ROUND SALON Cheyanne, Debbi, Linda, Sheryl, Sandy, Beth, Janna, Jo, & Rina ARE HERE FOR ALL YOUR OPEN YEAR ROUND! Hair, Nails, and Pedicure Services crowd, when someone in the sound booth put on a tape of John Len- non's song "Imagine." Everyone stopped in their tracks and turned back to the stage where the band members had turned on one of the lights by the microphone and they started singing the song in English. The whole crowd started singing along, waving their arms back and forth, putting their arms around each other--Mexicans, Ameri- cans of all kinds just being part of something so special and feeling so good towards each other. When the final verse came up with the words, "Imagine all the people, sharing all the world", I have to admit I had tears running down my face it was such a special moment...I called it my Woodstock moment for those of you who remember how that event went. This whole Rock Fiesta was probably not the huge financial success they had hoped for, but if you judge it by the wonderful peo- ple who came together for two days of great music and food, lots of fun and new friends, it was a huge suc- cess!! Thanks, Hal and the Town for all the hard work making this such a wonderful experience!! We hope that something like this will come back again sometime.
