FAITH IS THE GREAT HEALER The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: The answer to this question is based on how one receives and per- ceives what the Bible has said in so many occasions... Jesus is known as a divine healer, and many miracles of healing were performed by him. The Bible says they brought their sick and diseased to Jesus, and he healed them. Jesus healed people who were spiritually and morally corrupt. Some sicknesses have a spiritual basis and the heal- ing comes because we learn to believe and trust God. MEDITATION CAN HELP Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Missouri: Because spirituality can't be empirically measured, it is difficult to know with cer- tainty whether some illnesses have a spiritual basis or not. We do know that stress certainly is a factor in and sometimes can cause many illnesses. Our modern fast-paced society encourages us to be increasingly more productive through multitasking and taking on more responsibilities that in turn result in increasing levels of stress... While it may not be possible to know whether sick- ness has a spiritual basis, spiritual practice can help prevent illness and be very healing. Since the 1970 s it has been known that meditation practice reduces heart rate and blood pressure. So while we may not know if illness has a spiritual basis, we do know that spiritual practice has the potential for healing. The great physician I recently met a family who had life-threatening and totally unexpected health challenges. By the grace of God, and with expert care this family received healing and can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. Howev- er, their medical bills were so over- whelming that they had to sell their home. The whole issue of private health insurance and/or public health insur- ance is being debated even as we read today's GodTalk Column. I would like to introduce a "third option" which is often overlooked, Jesus Christ — the great physician. Dr. Jesus, along with being our Savior and Lord, He is also our healer. Hallelujah. Let's shout it together, shall we — Hallelujah. The New Testament book of Hebrews 13:8 says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever." What does God's Word mean when it says, "Jesus Christ is the same?" The Old Testament points forward to Jesus Christ as our Savior. Isaiah 9:6 says, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace." God's Word declares both the humanity of Jesus Christ, "a child is born." And the deity of Jesus Christ, "a Son is given." Isaiah 53:5 says, "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." Wow. Along with being our Savior from sin and offering us forgiveness, grace and mercy, Jesus also is our healer. Let us look at a few Old Testa- ment examples of healing. Job's sick- ness and suffering was removed when he saw his own sin and self-will and confessed it to the Lord. In Job 42:5- 6 he humbly states, "I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you. Therefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes." After he was humbled Job had a stronger faith in God. It is one thing to hear some- body else's testimony of healing. However, after receiving God's healing Job had his own testimony of healing. Furthermore, after receiving God's healing, Job received a double blessing from the Lord. Job 42:10 says, "And the Lord restored Job's losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed, the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before." Hallelujah. Even though Job prayed for his three friends and they meant well, they were not very understanding, compas- sionate or supportive of him. Just like Job, when you and I suffer, when life hurts more than we want it to, we can get a "spirit of anger, bitterness and retaliation" toward both God and toward other people, if we think that they do not understand our suffering, or if we think that they do not support us in our suffering. Job 42:8b says, "My servant Job shall pray for you. For I will accept him, lest I deal with you according to your folly; because you have not spoken of Me what is right as my servant Job has." Another Old Testament scripture on healing is Exodus 15:26b, "For I am the Lord who heals you." Psalm 103:2-4a says, "Bless the Lord, O my soul. And forget not all His benefits; who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases." This Psalm reminds me that we have a tendency to forget the Lord's benefit of not only spiritual healing and forgiveness, but of physical health and healing as well. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forev- er. Yesterday refers to the life of Jesus Christ revealed in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It also refers to the wonderful testimonies of church his- tory. Today refers to the life of Christ revealed in his church, the Body of Christ. In II Corinthians 3:23, the Apostle Paul says to the Corinthian believers, "You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart." Praise God for all of the people that we know who have a "testimony of God's healing today." Hallelujah. Let us join our hearts together in prayer. Christ Jesus, You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. You are the Great Physician and our Healer. May Your divine and supernatural healing be released into the lives of all of your suffering children. And, help each one of us to share Your comfort and Your healing with every- one around us — glory to God — amen. Let us join our hearts together in prayer. Major Frank Severs leads the Red Bluff chapter of the Salvation Army. Frank Severs GodTalk After weeks of furor, public gets to see Tim Tebow ad NEW YORK (AP) — No one except a few insiders has seen it. Yet a ''Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life'' ad featuring football star Tim Tebow and paid for by a conserva- tive Christian group is already per- haps the most hotly debated Super Bowl commercial ever. When the 30-second ad finally airs in the first quarter of Sunday's CBS telecast — at a cost estimated at $2.5 million — it's expected to show the devout quarterback and his mother, Pam, sharing the story of how she gave birth to him in the Philippines in 1987 after spurning a doctor's advice to have an abortion for medical reasons. In the past two weeks, as news of the ad spread, it has generated a vast, often passionate national dis- cussion — the subject of countless newspaper columns, blogs and tweets, and fodder for dozens of advocacy groups to spar over abor- tion, women's rights and free speech. Broadcasting and marketing experts say it's the first politically tinged advocacy ad ever with a national buy on a Super Bowl. The audience is projected at 100 million viewers. The idea for ad originated last year with a staff member at Focus on the Family, an evangelical Chris- tian organization based in Colorado Springs, Colo., that provides advice on marriage and parenting, and also has campaigned vigorously against abortion, same-sex marriage and comprehensive sex-education. Focus found willing partners in Pam Tebow, a missionary and evan- gelist, and her youngest son, Tim, whose Heisman Trophy-winning career at Florida was interspersed with missionary outreach of his own. Only on Jan. 15 did plans for the ad become public, when Focus issued a press release about it. Ini- tially, Focus was coy about the ad's precise message, but president and CEO Jim Daly was more explicit in a video posted online Thursday. ''Over 50 million children have lost their lives due to abortion,'' Daly said. ''We simply want to ask people the question: Can we do bet- ter? I think we can.'' The controversy over the ad was slow to build but ignited on Jan. 25 when the National Organization for Women, the Feminist Majority and other liberal women's groups launched a protest campaign aimed at pressuring CBS to scrap the ad.
