This weekend is also the weekend of the KU Relays. Please plan to attend and visit the chapter house, meet the outstanding young men of Sigma Nu, and reminisce with your pledge brothers. I came to Sigma Nu as the temporary house director in October, filling in for my good friend, Sally Nixon, as she undergoes immunotherapy for melanoma. Sally's doctor advised her to move out of the chapter house during treatment in order to avoid the sicknesses that quickly spreads when more than 80 young men live in close proximity. I recently retired from KU, had plenty of time on my hands, and was already familiar with the chapter since I frequently visited Sally. In addition, Sally brags to her friends all the time about how the brothers excel in academics and intramurals, win awards at their national convention, serve on Interfraternity Council, and are just great men. It didn't take long for me to agree to be Sally's in-house presence and junior housemother during her medical treatment. I discovered that Nu Chapter really is one of the smartest chapters on campus. Last semester, the new pledge class averaged an astonishing 3.59 GPA—number one among fraternaties! The overall chapter 3.41 GPA was number two. Visiting with the men at dinner, I've been impressed that most of the freshmen have already identified their majors, are in the honors program, have scholarships, and seem to be remarkably squared away for college. Sometimes after dinner on weeknights, I pass by the dining room and am amazed that the room is quiet as dozens of brothers click away on their laptops, focused on studying. Of course this idyllic scene is replaced a few hours later by booming five-foot-tall audio speakers and boisterous laughter—but it looks to me like the smart Sigma Nus clearly know how to balance serious study with serious fun! I've been surprised at the breadth of Sally's knowledge about every aspect of the chapter house and its mechanical and operating systems and the frequency that knowledge is needed. She's taught me who to call to replace a large broken window, how to turn off the fire alarm, who should repair the inside sprinkler system, how to adjust the cumbersome HVAC system, how to use wetvac equipment to soak up major water spills, which alumnus to contact to approve a costly repair, where to purchase replacement globes for the dining room fixtures, and how to remove crushed pop cans from the roof gutters— and that was just in the first few weeks! Sally put me in contact with the Mom's Club to coordinate Christmas decorations and treats during finals week. She introduced me to the other house directors and made sure I was included in their social activities. And most importantly, Sally told me not to worry if I couldn't quite remember the names of all the members—though it's getting easier. It helps that 15 members have names that begin with an "A" (Austin, Alex, Alec, Andrew, or Andy), so I have a 20% chance of being right if I just try an "A" name! The brothers have been friendly and welcoming, and I enjoy getting to know them individually during dinner. Sally is tolerating her treatment infusions, and, hopefully, an upcoming scan will show that the drugs are making a difference. I know that Mom Sally misses seeing her boys and looks forward to returning as soon as she can. In the meantime, Mom Molly is having a great time! Thank you, Sigma Nu, for your hospitality and kindness. Best, Molly Mulloy A Message from Mom Sally M y heartfelt thanks and gratitude to my Sigma Nu family for your support and kindness through this long and boring situation I got myself into! I'm eagerly awaiting the "BIG OKAY" from my wise and caring doctor so that I may return to my very own petri dish! I find myself yearning for the noise, the conversations, the music (including the vibrations in my walls bouncing the frames up and down), the Coke machine, the University Daily Kansan, the food, the sweat, and most of all, the guys and the hugs! My heartfelt thanks to Mom Molly also. Knowing that she's there is a comfort to me. She's fun, a little sassy, and has just enough hearing loss to get to sleep! Rock Chalk! Mom Sally
