THANK YOU, ANNUAL CAMPAIGN DONORS From College to Career Alumnus Chris Carr '91 Shares How Alpha Nu Impacted His Life I t was the summer of 1987 when Chris Carr '91 first met the men of Alpha Nu. Introduced by James "Jimmy" Jongebloed Jr. '89, the recruitment chairman in Houston; he got to know the brothers of Sigma Chi prior to starting school in Austin. These men appeared to be just like Chris—fun, athletic, down to earth—the exact sort of friends he was hoping to find. Nearly 30 years later, Sigma Chi remains one of the most influential features of his life. After becoming a full-fledged member of Alpha Nu, Chris took full advantage of the leadership opportunities the Fraternity offers its members. He served as the president of his class, chairman of the brotherhood committee, Houston recruitment chairman, and Fight Night chairman. "I remember being very proud of having planned Fight Night with my co-chairman, back when it was still a giant, two-band blowout at the Austin Coliseum," Chris said. These leadership roles not only kept him engaged in the Chapter, but would provide him with the skills and confidence needed to pursue sucess post-graduation. Sigma Chi was a benefit to Chris' development and transition from college to career. "Sigma Chi taught me the value of networking and provided a fun environment in which I began to work hard, have fun, and get along with a variety of individuals," Chris said. "It left me with lifelong friends who I have been proud to call clients, partners, and business associates." After leaving his years at The University of Texas, Chris pursued law school at Texas Tech and embarked on a promising career as an attorney. He has worked for various law firms in Texas, including his own firm, Jones, Carr, and McGoldrick LLP. In 2014, Chris was promoted to executive vice president, general counsel, and secretary of USMD Holdings, Inc., a healthcare company located in Dallas, in addition to working with his own firm. Staying close to the members of his pledge class remains a priority for Chris. "Pledgeship was the most special time for me. It's very hard to describe how a period that was so challenging was by far the best, but I will bet that if you polled the brothers from my class most would agree," Chris said. As a class, they make an effort to reunite for ski trips and the annual Texas versus OU game in Dallas, keeping the bonds of brotherhood strong. Chris and his wife, Shannon, live in Dallas with their three children: Will (13), Clara (10), and Christian (9). Chris is very involved in his children's lives, but makes time for himself to run local races, ski, cook, and read. You can contact him at chris.carr@jcmfirm.com.
