Alumnae News (Continued from page 2) T he role of an advisor offers a unique perspective of the chapter and the undergraduate members. Alumnae in this position have the opportunity to positively affect the future of the chapter and see what it really takes to keep our legacy strong. For Patricia Goodwin Sexton '62, serving as recruitment advisor was also an opportunity to give back to the chapter that had given her so much. "Being an advisor offered me a much deeper perspective of what it means to be an Alpha Gam." When Patty first came to the University of Alabama, she was a small town girl from Selma. "I went to UA because of three people from my hometown that I had deep respect for. It turns out that all three of them were Alpha Gams." In ΑΓΔ, she found a family away from home. "When I walked through the doors, I just felt so at home. No one was stereotyped. You didn't have to wear your string of pearls or your sweater around your neck. I knew this was a place that I could fit in." After graduation, Patty remained involved with Psi Chapter as the recruitment advisor from 1970-78. "I've been lucky to see recruitment and what it means to be an Alpha Gam from every perspective." Many members from that era will remember Patty's infamous mirror and the emphasis she placed on finding the beauty in each and every rushee. One of her biggest pieces of advice for the undergraduate members was, "Remember, you're only borrowing this chapter for four years; it belongs to everyone that came before us and everyone that will come after us. You're standing on the foundation that they laid, you're strengthening the foundation while you're here, and you will be leaning on that foundation when you leave." Years later, Patty was thrilled to have her daughters follow in her footsteps. "I feel extremely blessed that both my daughters chose to pledge Alpha Gam in different eras." Shannon Sexton Jernigan '87 and Sarah Kay Sexton Wos '98 both became recruitment chairmen during their time at Psi Chapter. Patty and her husband, Joe, have moved back to Selma. She retired from her position with the City of Selma in their office of planning and development in 2012. She has a bird dog named Heart who has given her "a new lease on life." Patty also remains very involved with First Baptist Church leading the adult women's Sunday school class, Agape. You can connect with her at (334) 412-5816.
