One day you're watching excited young women meet their new sisters on Bid Day, and the next, they are graduating and entering the next chapter of their lives. Along the way, they become a family. Some come to Alpha Gam from small towns in Alabama and some from across the country. There are those who have pledged with the comfort of hometown friends and others who have struck out on their own. Over the years, there have been countless study halls, pledge swaps, formals, and football seasons. In the end, each one has grown into a leader through her Alpha Gamma Delta experiences. From the standpoint of an advisor, I've watched the undergraduate members take on many challenges. I have seen them manage multi-million dollar budgets, plan social events for hundreds of people, stage recruitment for more than 2,000 rushees, enforce tough rules on their closest friends, and lead in ways that show maturity far beyond their years. Our members have planned menus to work within budgets, faced unfair media attention, and dealt with some very adult issues; all while being named the best sorority on campus. It has been an absolute joy to watch them grow into the beautiful young ladies they've become and they give me so much hope for the future. Psi Chapter has a sweet tradition of the officers and their advisors going out for dinner at the end of their term. It's not business, but sheer fun—a time to just laugh and enjoy each other's company; time to cherish the friendships they've made with their future bridesmaids, the future godmothers to their children, and lifelong friends. As I watched them that night, I was reminded how their four years of college have flown by and how grateful I am for having had a front row seat to watch it all. "The physical responsibilities are huge, but the emotional and nurturing responsibilities are even bigger," shares Psi Chapter's new housemother, Jeanette Hopkins '76. She has enjoyed coming back to Psi Chapter and having the opportunity to get to know the undergraduate members. "I have really loved meeting all of the girls and their families. It has been wonderful to see the freshmen starting out and I can't wait to see how they grow and mature over their college years." As housemother, Jeanette's responsibilities include ensuring the kitchen and food service process runs smoothly, overseeing the cleanliness of the house, handling general repairs and maintenance, and maintaining the security of the property and the women's safety.
