I n the fall of 1961, I (Len Kirberg '66) was a pledge at AΔZ and Brian Roth '63 announced the Chapter was going to host the first Benefit Chicken Dinner. Later that semester, we had a Christmas party for underprivileged children. Fast forward 46 years as I reconnected with AΔZ in retirement; I was blown away with community service at the Chapter. Every man in Lambda Chi was required to perform 20 hours of community service each semester. With 40 or 50 young men, that is 800 to 1,000 hours per semester, 1,600 to 2,000 hours per year, and between 6,400 to 10,000 hours over four to five years at MST. A few years ago, AΔZ placed third in the nationwide Lambda Chi Alpha North American food drive. This year, they volunteered at the Rolla High School wrestling tourney, and in late February, they will collect canned goods for Feeding America. Last semester, the Benefit Chicken Dinner raised over $5,000 for local Rolla charities, and this has been the case since 2007. Every year since 1998, six to eight brothers volunteer in the Miner Alumni Association offices between classes. Other charities that have been recipients of AΔZ volunteer efforts for many years are Ronald McDonald House, Boys and Girls Club, Choices for People, Gingerbread House, March of Dimes, Rolla's Got Talent, Big Pink (Breast Cancer) Volleyball, Special Olympics, CLA Humane Society, Theta Tau's pizza night, Derby Days penny wars, Chi Omega's spaghetti dinner, Panhellenic lollipops, Zeta's fish fry, Jimmy Johns fundraiser for St. Jude Hospital, raising funds for a the late rugby coach's family, Kappa Delta's Eat Like a Kid fundraiser, blood drives, and adopt-a-highway cleanup. This record of sustained community service over many years attests to a quantum shift in values for hundreds of AΔZ men. All alumni should recognize these young men and support their efforts by donating to the current campaign for the rebuilding of our 60-year-old Chapter House. Won't you join with our 156 existing brothers who have already donated? COMMUNITY SERVICE: A Great Tradition at ΛXA High Zeta Officers The newly elected Zeta officers planning out the semester.
