Angel Update 2 Positive Pi Phi Experience Encourages Dr. Sandra Cook '62 to Support Colorado Alpha D r. Sandra Cook '62 identified with the women of Pi Beta Phi more than any other group of women at CU. Little things such as gathering with sisters over a bowl of popcorn in the snack kitchen and talking about their dreams and aspirations made Sandra feel most at home. "Pi Phi provided an atmosphere of women who were interested in education. We had a great deal of fun but also took ourselves seriously in preparing for the future," Sandra explained. Colorado Alpha was only the beginning of Sandra's commitment to her education. As an undergraduate, Sandra served as Scholarship Chairman and earned her degree in anthropology. After an exciting career in anthropology and archaeology, Sandra decided to further her education once again by going to dental school. She earned her D.D.S. from the University of Nebraska; she was the only woman in her dental school class and was only the fourth woman to graduate from Nebraska's dental school, which has been in operation for 100 years. Sandra moved on to the University of Iowa to earn her specialty in endodontics and then practiced her dental career in Arizona. She had the honor of being the first woman president of the Arizona State Dental Association. Sandra's brilliant professional success has enabled her to give back to Colorado Alpha. When Nancy Dornfeld '62 contacted her and explained that the house needed help, Sandra offered support. She believes alumnae should look into their hearts and review their Pi Phi memories. "If there are memories worth continuing, we should help to continue them," Sandra said. A few years ago, Sandra reconnected with eight women with whom she graduated in 1965. Almost 50 years had gone by, but they still had so much in common. "We had a sleepover, reminisced and ended up singing Pi Phi songs!" Sandra shared. "Even after many years, I am proud to know each of these quality women." Sandra has three children: Whitney, Wilson and Hilary, all of whom live within an hour of her home in Tucson. Wilson, an architect, built and designed Sandra's home, which has been featured in several publications. Sandra keeps busy by knitting, studying the nature in her own backyard and keeping up with her seven grandchildren, who refer to her as Mad Gram, which is short for Madeline's Grandma and has nothing to do with her tremor or her sanity. In early February, she went through deep brain surgery to treat her Parkinson's Disease; the surgery went well. She is healing uneventfully and is grateful for all the letters of support and concern she has received from her Colorado Alpha Pi Phi Sisters Alumnae Support Needed: How Will You Get Involved?
