"The physicality we're playing against, being familiar with playing in the West,theimportanceofpen- alty killing in the playoffs and down the stretch run is obviously a big indicator." Alongwithlastsummer's additions of Martin Jones, Paul Martin and Joel Ward, and so far retaining a core group that has been to- gether for several seasons, Monday's move is another clear signal the Sharks are pushing all of their chips to the middle of the table for this season. Both Spaling and Polak are slated to be unrestrictedfreeagentsthis summer. "I think the message is we think we have a chance andmanagementisgoingto do what they can to try and help the group out," Sharks coach DeBoer said. "Now it's on us to get them on the ice together and deliver the proper results." In Polak, arguably the biggest key to the deal, the Sharks are adding a 6-foot, 237 pound defenseman that can kill penalties and play big minutes. Polak, 29, has played535NHLregularsea- songamesover10yearsand had 13 points and 56 pen- alty minutes in 55 games with the Maple Leafs this season. "He's a real pro," said Blues coach Ken Hitchcock, who had Polak for close to two seasons. "He's no main- tenance, great team guy, holds other people account- able, holds himself account- able. He's not fun to play against, tough guy, team- mates love him, coaches love him. ... A great add." Spaling, 27, had seven points in 35 games, and had a goal and an assist for the Leafs on Saturday against Philadelphia. He can play center or the wing, and fig- ures to slot on either the Sharks'thirdorfourthlines. A penalty killer like Po- lak, Spaling missed over a month with an upper body injury he suffered Dec. 17. He returned Jan. 26 and played 11 games. He's also won 51 percent of his fa- ceoffs this season. The Maple Leafs already announced that Torres, 34, will be reassigned to the Barracuda, with whom he had played six games. Sharks FROM PAGE 1 week or two away from re- turning to the A's. The injury was so grue- some that manager Bob Melvin said, "I had to look away, and that was a video on a phone. It was bad." Parker said he essentially took a deep breath and re- solved to move on. He's moved to the point where he could be a major factor with the A's in 2016 — as a starter or in the bullpen if it appears his arm would hold up better in shorter spurts. "He's a great starter," Doolittle said. "Can you imagine how good he could be out of the bullpen with that high-90s fastball and that command in the strike zone? We're all pulling for him, because he's workedso hard to come back." Parker has said in the past that he likes starting, but he wants to see what his body tells him over the next few weeks. He says he's not going to be ready to start in any of the first few Cactus League games that begin next week. A's FROM PAGE 1 By Jon Wilner BayAreaNewsGroup Tuesday marks the opening of Stanford's spring practice and the beginning of the quarter- back competition between Keller Chryst and Ryan Burns. Only 181 days to go. Coach David Shaw doesn't plan to name a starter until 10 days before the season opener against Kansas State. That makes Aug. 23 the date to circle — unless it isn't. During a recent overview of the sit- uation, Shaw broached the possibility of playing two quarterbacks, at least ini- tially. Chryst had a slight edge last year, but the estab- lished pecking order be- came irrelevant the day after the Rose Bowl. Both players have blank slates as they prepare for the first snaps of spring. "Both guys can go out there and operate the game plan," Shaw said. "To what extent, we're going to find out. "We're going to give them a great opportunity this spring, but in train- ing camp, we're going to overload them. We're go- ing to see how much they can take." The unfolding of the quarterback competition is just one area to watch during the Cardinal's spring practice. Here are two others: Theblindside The difficulty of break- ing in a new quarterback increases by an order of magnitude because of at- trition on the left side of the offensive line. Stanford loses argu- ably the best guard-tackle tandem in the nation in Joshua Garnett, the Out- land Trophy winner, and Kyle Murphy, a first-team all-conference selection. One option at tackle is to move starter Casey Tucker from the right side. Reserves David Bright and Nick Davidson will also compete for one of the two spots. Brandon Fanaika, a red- shirt sophomore who spent two years on a church mis- sion before joining the Cardinal, is a leading can- didate to take over for Gar- nett. Stanford is also in need of a center after Graham Shuler's retirement. Jesse Burkett and Brian Chaffin will compete for the job, with starting right guard Johnny Caspers an option if all else fails. The front line The Cardinal lost two of its top-four linemen (Aziz Shittu and Brennan Scar- lett), and one of the return- ees, Harrison Phillips, is coming off a serious knee injury. That leaves tal- ented sophomore Solo- mon Thomas as the only healthy, proven member of a unit that is once again Stanford's most vulnera- ble. The search for able bod- ies begins with two con- verts: Eric Cotton, a for- mer tight end, and Luke Kaumatule, who has played tight end and out- side linebacker and could be an impact player once he gets comfortable on the line.
