LOUIS With an eye towards the playoffs and what might await them in the first round, the Sharks on Monday acquired de- fenseman Roman Polak and cen- ter Nick Spaling from Toronto for embattled forward Raffi Torres and San Jose's second-round se- lections in the 2017 and 2018 NHL Entry Drafts. Neither Polak nor Spaling played for the Sharks in their game Monday night against the St. Louis Blues. Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said he be- lieves the two players will be able to play on Wednesday when the team plays in Colorado. A's right-hander Jarrod Parker, who hasn't pitched in a big-league game since 2013, stepped on the sec- ond mound from the right at Fitch Park, where six mounds sit side-by-side. He threw 26 pitches, all fastballs, and while it wasn't the equivalent of win- ning the World Series, it was a moment worth relishing. "It's awesome; I'm excited," A's closer Sean Doolittle said. "What a weapon he can be. Peo- ple don't understand how much work he's put in to get to this point. A lot of guys might have packed it in last summer when he hurt his elbow again, but he didn't give in to that. He just got back into it." Parker said he had a serious case of nerves, and at one point rookie catcher Carson Blair went to the mound and instructed the pitcher to slow things down. "I was probably a little too ex- cited, a little too quick the first half," Parker said. "I got over the excitement and realized I was just pitching and throwing again. I was able to channel and slow things down a little." It was just over two years ago that Parker, now 27, came out of a spring training game with elbow pain. Regarded as one of the best young starters in the American League, Parker thought it might be something that rest would cure in a cou- ple of weeks. Instead, he had to undergo a second Tommy John surgery. He made it back by the mid- dle of last season, only to frac- ture his elbow throwing a pitch for Triple-A Nashville. "He told me Anderson was one of his favorite players he's had in the NBA as a player or a GM," Kerr said. "That seems to be the domi- nant thought from anybody who's been around him, so he'll be great in our locker room and he'll get a chance to play."
