Brannaman, often hailed as the real-life "horse whisperer," hosts clinics worldwide to teach people to communicate sensitively with their horses without punish- ment. His techniques of "nat- ural horsemanship" helped inspire the charac- ter Tom Booker in Nicholas Evans' novel "The Horse Whisperer." Brannaman was further catapulted into fame as the subject of the award- winning documentary, "Buck." Red Bluff clinic that start- ed Friday and runs through Monday at the Tehama District Fair- ground, Brannaman will be available to the public Saturday during "An Evening With Buck Bran- naman." The day will kick off with a hearty breakfast prepared by the Park Committee beginning at 7 a.m. at Simpson Finnell Park. Local students got a preview Friday when reinactors gave lessons on lifestyles of the war days. The 8th annual two-day event, staged by the 72nd New York State Volunteer Infantry reenactor group, will be open to the public 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Battles will occur at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $5 per person and $1 for children 10 and younger. Parking will be avail- able at a designated area at The Home Depot, with handicap parking available only at the park. News tip? Call 527-2151, Ext. 112 Lassen Astrobiology Intern program, a part- nership between Red Bluff High School, Lassen Volcanic Nation- al Park and NASA Ames Research Center, will hold its recognition night and public lecture 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 at the Red Bluff Union High School Library Conference Room. The lecture "Mars Exploration Lassen and Life" will be presented by Dave Des Marais, Ph.D, the principal investigator of the NASA Astrobiology Institute's Ames Research Center team. Des Marais has inves- tigated the biogeochem- istry of microbial ecosystems and Earth's early biosphere, and he has participated in Mars exploration.
