Rev. Johnson, along with her late husband, Bernhard, established the Bernhard Ministries in Brazil, and she has just celebrated 50 years of ministry there. They began correspondence school, Brazil Extension School of Theology (BEST) and Brazil Advanced School of Theology (BAST) which have an enrollment of over 22,000 students. The Rev. Doris Johnson to be National Day of Prayer The Red Bluff Ministerial Association invites community, civic, education, and business leaders to the Annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast from 7- 8 a.m. on May 3 at the Red Bluff Community Center. Join us in a united expression of prayer for our city, community, county, state and national leaders. Please RSVP before May 1 at 527-2449. Also, the public is invited to join at the steps of our county court house around the flag pole at Noon as well to pray together towards the common good of all our citizens. Let's join our entire nation to ask for God's blessings. National Day of Prayer Once again the National Day of Prayer is celebrated the first Thursday of May. An annual event since 1952, the day roots in the dawn of American history and has never received govern- ment subsidy of any kind. It has never been used for protest or other political purposes, although some would say the very effort to express obligation to a higher authority is somehow subver- sive. In any case, to the Christians who celebrate the day it is simply an oppor- tunity to render to Caesar what belongs to him in the form of honor and blessing, and to God what belongs to Him in the form of higher honor, bigger blessing, and an appeal for His intervention in our community and national life. The national theme this year is "One Nation under God," and the scriptural banner is Psalms 33:12, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." Locally we are upping the ante a bit. God has been calling for a season of repentance in the Church through individual voices in the Chris- tian community, through several large gatherings of thousands to pray and worship over the past two years, and through the heart of this writer – as I have said and written a number of times. Our theme is "A Culture of Repentance," our anchoring scripture is Matthew 4:17, "Repent, for the Kingdom of God pursues you," and our understanding is that God calls His people to turn away from all that we have accomplished to focus progres- sively on what He is accomplishing. Two things are important to note. One is that a call to repentance is nei- ther punishment nor rebuke. It is sim- ply a statement that our agendas – however praiseworthy – are impeding This year National Day of Prayer will celebrate the privilege of repen- tance. In Redding we gather in the breezeway at City Hall to speak aloud the whole Word of God from April 30 through May 3 – around the clock – and enjoy the peace of God that always falls when we do this. We will gather in the City Hall Plaza at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, to praise our Lord, pray for people who come into the prayer tents dotting the plaza, and praise God for what He does as we our access to greatness, to life itself. When we progressively turn away from focus on our ideas, plans, entitle- ments and activities we turn toward what He is doing and that is always a good thing; it is the best thing, and it is a great priv- ilege. The other is that we make a serious mistake if we think our job is to call the nation to repentance. That call is always – if we pay attention to our own scriptures – issued to the people who claim to belong to God. That is the case in the Old Testament, "If my people…" and it is still true in the New when the Holy Spirit proclaims that judg- ment begins in the House of God. When we Christians stop aborting our babies and leaving our husbands and wives and children with the same fre- quency as those outside of the Body we will have legs to stand on when we preach. And when we begin to live the victorious lives that are the fruit of repentance the world will beat a path to our door. James hear people tell what He has done. We will gather again at noon on Thursday, May 3, as leaders from many spheres of interest and influence ask God's blessings on our community, state and nation. The Day is not about protesting any- thing, or lobbying for any- thing. It is about blessing those for whom Christ died – that's everybody – and about repenting on behalf of the people who claim His Name. That's all she wrote. Wilson GodTalk often make, that the constitution of our nation forbids the state from intruding on the Church precisely in order to enable the influence of the Church to intrude on the state. But I think I will instead respond as I did to the man a couple of years ago who objected to my team praying on a pub- lic sidewalk. When I said we only wanted to bless him he growled that he did not want my blessings. "Too late," I smiled. God's call to a culture of repen- tance is a tremendous privilege; His peace will fall where it is heeded. But the call is only for those who recognize His authority. Some say the National Day of Prayer should be banned as an intrusion of Church into state. They argue in the courts. I could make the same argument I James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. "If my people will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin and will heal their land." (II Chronicles 7:14) Fifth Sunday Sing The First Southern Baptist Church, 525 Kimball Road, in Red Bluff will be hosting the Fifth Sunday Sing at 6 p.m. on April 29. Please come out for a fun evening of music, fellowship and finger foods. University Women's Choir will be performing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 16 at the Red Bluff First Church of God at South Jackson Street and Luther Road. young women, under the direction of Dr. Philip Miller.
