6A Daily News – Friday, April 27, 2012 Education in Tehama County KEEP ON compete in national contest Student Career Days (SCD) is an annual three-day com- petition and networking event for students enrolled in horti- culture programs at two- and four-year colleges and univer- sities from across the country. Each year, a different host location is selected, which LEARNING Shasta College students gives the participants a chance to see different regions of the country and increases the level of difficulty for some of the outdoor competitions. This year's event was at Kansas State University in Man- hattan, Kansas. Close to 800 green industry students demonstrated their skills in 28 different real-world, compet- itive events. Four Shasta College students attended industry spon- sored workshops and the Planet Career Fair. The Shasta College team consisted of Jeremiah Wheel- The team did well with Jeremiah placing 3rd overall out of 769 students, wining $500 and a big "super star" trophy. Tyler Placed 39th overall even though he only competed in four events instead of five events like most of the top plac- ing students. Both Tyler and Jeremiah placed third in Irri- gation installation out of 50 teams. er, Tyler Penn, Amanda Blank, and Steve Verhoeven. The members of the team competed in Skid Steer operation, Backhoe Operation, Irrigation Installation, Irrigation trou- bleshooting, Hardscape Installation, Plant Identification and Track an Trailer Operation. would like to thank everyone who came out to support its Scholastic Book Fair. The Book Fair, held April 3-5, coincided with the May- Maywood book fair The students and staff at the Maywood Middle School wood School's Open House and was a big success. The school earned about $1,500 to purchase new books. Parents and family members enjoyed the Book Fair's Hawaiian Luau theme during the Open House. Refresh- ments were provided by Leslie Passantino, Maywood's Cafeteria Manager. Book Fair profits will be used to purchase new books for the Maywood School Library. The community support for this Scholastic Book Fair has made a difference for our stu- dents by helping to encourage a love for reading, and by providing a wide variety of book titles for various interests and reading levels. Maywood students would like to thank the parents and family members who worked at the Scholastic Book Fair and to the school staff who helped in many different ways.
