JULIEZEEB-DAILYNEWS Two men dish up food at the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale Kickoff Breakfast on Tuesday in the Don Smith Pavilion. ByHeatherHoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews. com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF The 75th An- nual Red Bluff Bull & Geld- ing Sale events began Tues- day with the sifting and grading of all range ready bulls at the Don Smith Pa- vilion at the Tehama Dis- trict Fairground. Hundreds of bulls were examined by four judges who looked at the bulls' structure and soundness, said Adam Owens, Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale manager. The judges, including a veterinarian, first look for lameness or an abnormal stance. They will then look for soundness and abnor- malities and check for any flaws the bulls may have to decide whether or not to sift them. Bull Sale Manager Adam Owens welcomed the audience before turn- ing things over to Kerry Nieuwkoop, a North State Merck Animal Health rep- resentative, and Kevin Hill, DVM, with Merck Animal Health Technical Services. "Thank you for coming down (to breakfast) and thank you consignors for being here," Owens said. "We're excited to cele- brate and proud to have survived 75 years, which is no small achievement." Hill is a former veter- inarian who practiced in Utah for 27 years prior to coming to Merck about 10 years ago, he said. He gave a presentation on ways to add value to beef cattle. Right now is a unique time with a lot of un- certainty where the bot- tom of prices will be, Hill said. It's a great time to look at what can be done to add value to the cattle to make more money from them and to look at what buyers are willing to pay more for. The important thing to do is research what will work for your specific operation and to consider all the costs ver- sus what margin of in- crease one can expect. The three reliable ways to add to the profit mar- gin are pre-conditioning of a herd, parasite control and implants, Hill said. Preconditioning is de- ciding at what level it is cost effective to vaccinate the calves, boiling down to just vaccinating at birth versus keeping them longer and giving them additional doses. It's an area where one can add $20-50 per head of cattle to the final price. Parasite control de- pends on giving the right vaccine at the right time to be the most effective and looking at the right way to administer the parasite control.
