Yvette Borden confirmed about 12:40 p.m. that. This is the fourth incident in- volving a suspicious device at the courthouse within about a year, Borden said. It was unknown Tuesday whether there is any connection between the most recent incident and the prior in- cidents. A call was received at 8:09 a.m. prompting one department to be evacuated and the court- house to be cordoned off along with a closure on Washington Street between Pine and Oak streets. That closure was lifted just before noon. The man who called in the threat led law enforcement offi- cers to a suspicious device made of cotton T-shirt fabric wrapped in electrical tape that was found by a water fountain, Borden said. The man claimed there were de- vices in all the bathrooms, but only the one by the water foun- tain was found during the initial sweep that was completed prior to 9:30 a.m. The Shasta County Bomb Squad was called in to dispatch the device, Bordon said. Two at- tempts were made to disrupt the device, but nothing blew up. All business in the court- house and annex was stopped while the building was cleared, but Presiding Judge Todd Bottke said court would re-open as soon as the building was cleared and the OK to resume was given, Court Executive Of- ficer Caryn Downing said. Downing was anticipating the re-opening to take place some- time after 1 p.m. and she said at no point were the lives of citizens or employees put in danger. "We did not let anyone back in until it was cleared by the Tehama County Sheriff's De- partment," Downing said. "We wouldn't jeopardize the lives of our employees or the public." As of 12:30 p.m. law enforce- ment still had the courthouse andlawn areacordonedoffwhile a search was made for evidence, but surrounding streets had all been reopened.
